"But the tigers come at night / With their voices soft as thunder / As they tear your hope apart / As they turn your dream to shame"
She's talking about drugs, living on the street, having to work as a prostitute, give up her daughter, gettings sick, all these things in life that have eaten away at her life to take away this dream that she had of this perfect life. And as we talked about it, she settled on signing "TEMPT POP-UP +++" for the Tigers come at night. Because it all started with her giving in to temptations that pulled her into this darker world and stole her dreams. She used unamed "things" off in space taking her deams and ripping them apart, and dream turning into shame is a lot of non-verbal work with her looking at her hands in shame.
A nice neutral Deaf perspective that talks abotu all those complicated feelings about students doing music. Includes advice to students about how to post their songs after their projects.
These guys have a little bit of fun with it, but it covers some serious concerns that we need to be aware of.
This girl is hated -- and honestly she just uses that to get more views. This is her latest "viral sensation".
This space was formerly held by a "cute couple" and went viral. She's an interpreter and he's the husband that learns a few signs and goes along for the ride.

This is a beginner level signer doing music in her bedroom... lots of music in her bedroom.
Dirty Signs with Trish is also in the past - She had been asked by the Deaf community stop. And despite admitting that she doesn't know sign language herself - she's now written a book on dirty sign language.
(The interpreter in the corner is Deaf)

This is the row of Josh... but it won't be the last you see of him.
Sippy Cup : This translation -- the FACE - how much meaning is just in his face and non-verbal gestures and how they evolve through the song. Josh helped me understand what this song was really about.
She Used to be Mine, from Waitress - About looking at the person you are now, and wondering what happened to that person you used to be. Josh uses Lauren (the singer) as the representation of the old self.. and the moment at the end is cool.
Satisfied -- The end all be all -- I can't post about Deaf translations without posting this.
A FUN song - most impressive is that this was done all in one shot. There is also a behind the scenes video, if you're curious you can find it! Where did those balloons come from??
Santa Baby - It's the little things. At :54 you can see his eye gaze as he watches for Santa to come down the chimney. He doesn't break the scene, he USES the break in the song to BUILD the scene. How does he match the affect?
I Don't Do Sadness from Spring Awakening - A great example of how to sign metaphors! He's LIKE a butterfly and LIKE a summer wind.. how does he set that up so it makes sense? Also notice Alex touching his own left shoulder, that a signal to Daniel to let him know where they are.
Defying Gravity - One way that Sandy wanted to defy her own gravity was interpret the song with no vocals! For more chills, just read her powerful statement below the video before you watch it. How does she capture ideas like "leaping", "fly" and "defying gravity"?
Pinball Wizard from Tommy - Russell actually played Tommy and this was his translation from the show. His "Sure plays a mean pinball" is almost like choreography
This is Me - Greatest Showman: There are other versions, but this is my favorite because of the personal story she tells with it. I'm already crying... you're crying!
Wrecking Ball - This uses mixed media, with the lyrics on the screen to supplement the meaning and provide enhanced access. I like her "I can't live a lie" (SHHH, cover, cover).
This is America - Childish - Just wow... he uses the elements from the video to enahnce the meaning, just like the song does
Somebody I Used to Know - I think this is a great balance between the ASL concepts while still giving us the song
Rosa Lee Timm and Russell Harvard - Opposites Attract: What I like so much about this one are the non-verbal actions that communicate the meaning so perfectly.
Hell No - This was her official music video, translated by Josh and performed by the cast of Spring Awakening. What are the different ways to say "no"?
Pride - Another official music video with a Deaf Artist involved. They heard about a Deaf lead on Broadway and thought it embodied the idea of their song. Josh translated this as well.
Seasons of Love - Rent: I love how they "measure" love. Technically this breaks my "Deaf artist" theme, but they're both CODAs and native signers...
This Girl is on Fire - Great energy and mix of metaphor and meaning
Biblical by the Deaf West Troupe - watch for how they deal with metaphors
So many different characters, taken on brilliantly!
My playlist of songs that I like where you can find even more songs .... https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLURHALB7xGb-U1Fe0kT1CLDOGN6GHHMQ4 -- But I would recommend any song by any of the above artists...
Can we do both form and meaning?
