Class overview: (from the syllabus) A course of intralingual language exercises that introduces students to and provides practice in techniques of rephrasing and restructuring meaning in ASL and in English. Exercises include rephrasing for meaning, restructuring for linguistic structures, and rephrasing complex utterances. One half of the course will focus on English and the other half will focus in ASL.
Translation? This is a translation class. You're going to translate the National Anthem. a song of your choice, a 10-minute clip of a movie of your choice, as well as the Sight Translation segment of the BEI. By going through that process of translating from English to ASL we'll study Semantics (meaning) and Applied Sociolinguistics (meaning in context).
Once we begin working on Songs our full focus will be on translation. Our focus will shift to the movie project once the songs have been performed, but the process will be the same. You will come to class with your translation questions, work with mentors and your parterns in breakout rooms. However there will be no "lessons" once our work on the song translations begin, we'll be applying what we learned from the first half of the semester to your work.
