John Baugh received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979 and is a past president of the Linguistic Society of America and the American Dialect Society. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Linguistic Society of America, and the American Dialect Society. His research applies a legal lens to the study of sociolinguistic variation, examining linguistic profiling across various contexts, including professional settings. He's (co)authored many articles and books including Black Street Speech: Its History, Structure, and Survival (1983), Beyond Ebonics: Linguistic Pride and Racial Prejudice (2000), and Linguistics in Pursuit of Justice (2018)
