Design For Motion
Animation
motion design is a form of animation, however traditional animation tends to focus on character development and literary narrative. Motion design focuses on art direction and uses a wide range of design assets. traditional animation is typically long format whereas motion design is relatively short. Animators who work well is fast paced scenarios, can create great motion design works.
Graphic Design
graphic designers are trained to create effective visual layouts, work with typography, and communicate messages clearly. these are also important skills to include when creating motion design, as motion requires precise and elegant use of type. graphic designer who want to make their work move can translate those skills into motion.
Visual Effects
much like animation, visual effects have many similarities. many of the same tools and principles are applied, but the difference is how the fit into the workflow. visual artist bring attention to detail and are very technically skilled, and work on one project over long period of time, where motion designers work on many projects.
Style Frames vs. Storyboards
style frames are the visual representation of what a motion piece will look like prior to animation. it is a single frame or image that depicts the look and feel of a motion design project. They present the ideas, emotions and narratives associated with a concept. a style frame is a snapshot of a finished frame as it would look within a longer animation.
Storyboards are always ordered in narrative or sub-narrative flows. Storyboards are a powerful way to visually present information; the linear direction of the cells is perfect for storytelling, explaining a process, and showing the passage of time. At their core, storyboards are a set of sequential drawings to tell a story.
Presentations and Pitches
motion design is a discipline that applies graphic design principles to filmmaking and video production through use of animation and visual effects
when presented motion, the designer wants to make sure it is engaging for the viewer in order to create something that will be successful. Motion add so much to something as it gives to viewer something new to look at with pop ups, objects and text moving, and so much more than just a still image can portray.
Concept Development to Finished Product
Once you have the background knowledge of how to create a design and what the process is, the designer must come up with a concept and how they want to approach that topic.
1. Project plan - Set up a place to plan your project
2. Brief - Define the concept and goals
3. Brainstorming - Generate ideas for your project
4. Moodboard - Organize inspiration & references
5. Storyboard - Visualize the sequence of your animation
6. Style frames - Share visual concepts with your team
Once this is done, the designer will have a basis of what they want to create and can start making it!
