Proof of concept: in this video we have a bucket of water, ferrofluid and glitter. In this scenario glitter is representing the largest size of microplastic that can be found in the enviornment. As is show the once the ferrofluid and plastic glitter specs come in contact with one another they stick together. Eventually with the added plastic the ferrofluid becomes more dense then water and sinks to the bottom where it could be collected with a magnet.
