This guide assumes that you have already created your hilt and therefore have some CAD experience.
If you have NOT designed your hilt, please consult the Demo Hilt guide available under the 3D modeling documentation on our website.
Additionally, this guide uses reference measurements that may differ from your saber. Please adjust accordingly.
This video explains all the steps to making the Covertech Wheel mount in detail. Please follow one or both guides while making your wheel mount.
NOTE: The video guide may explain some steps in a different order than the written guide. Both guides result in the same finished product.
This section covers how to define the surface for your Covertech wheel mount.
Select the bottom face of your saber and make a sketch.
Create a center point circle. Set the center of the circle to the opposite side of where you want to wheel mount to be located. This side should be where the edge of the circle is closest to the hilt.
In this example, the circle is drawn above the origin so that the mount will be placed on the "Back" face.
Set the diameter of the circle to 0.25 inches greater than the outer diameter of your saber. In this example, the saber hilt has a diameter of 1.5 inches, so the circle has a diameter of 1.75 inches.
Define the distance from the center of your circle and the origin as 0.125 inches.
Draw two lines from the origin to the circumference of your circle. The area between these lines should be wider than the area of your hilt.
Extrude the wedge shape section of your sketch.
Think about where you want your mount to be located in relation to the base of your saber. Set the distance to at least 1 inch greater than this distance.
In this example, the mount is placed 1 inch from the base of the saber, so the extrude is set to 2 inches.
This step removes the excess area surrounding the wheel mount, refining the surface created in part 1.
Create a sketch on the front plane.
Create a center point circle in a straight line above the origin.
Define the diameter of the circle as 0.75 inches.
Create a dimension between the center of the circle to the base of your saber. This dimension determines the height where your mount will be placed.
In this example, the dimension is set to 1 inch from the base of the saber.
Create a large center point rectangle that surrounds the whole area created in part 1.
Use the extrude tool to remove the area surrounded by the rectangle.
Extrude at least 1 inch, ensuring all the excess area is removed.
This step defines the screw hole and cleans up the internal geometry.
Create a sketch on the front plane.
Create a center point circle centered on the circle made in part 2.
Define the diameter of the circle as 11/64 inches.
Extrude the sketch, making a hole through the saber body. Set the merge scope to all parts in the path of extrude.
Select the Boolean tool.
Use the Boolean tool to merge the saber body and the part created in part 2.
Your parts will likely be named differently than the parts listed above.
Create a sketch on the bottom face of your saber
Create a center point circle.
Set the diameter of the circle equal to the inner diameter of your saber body (1.16 inches). This can be done using either the dimension tool or the equal tool.
Use the extrude tool to remove the excess geometry.
Ensure that extrude is set to remove and the merge scope is set to the saber body.
You now know how to create a Covertech Wheel mount on your own hilt.
Before attaching your Covertech Wheel and wearing it on your belt, you need to do the following.
Cut and sand down the set screw so that it is flush with the interior walls of the pipe. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE CHASIS IN OR OUT OF YOUR LIGHTSABER OTHERWISE.
Set the screw with Loctite Threadlocker Blue glue. DO NOT USE OR WEAR YOUR COVERTECH WHEEL ON YOUR BELT BEFORE SETTING THE SCREW WITH LOCTITE. THE SCREW MAY COME LOOSE, CAUSING YOUR LIGHTSABER TO FALL AND BECOME DAMAGAD. THE PERSON WRITING IS SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE AND IS TRYING VERY HARD TO WARN YOU.
