My PhD research aims to gain insights into translating teenlit (teenage literature) and young adult (TYA) novels from English into Indonesian using qualitative and quantitative methods. The corpus of this study is six pairs of English TYA novels and their translations, as well as three Indonesian novels to compare how sex-related languages are used in novels for TYA readers. This study also explores the strategies employed by translators and potential shifts in their translation approach over the years. By focusing on the translation of sex-related language, this study seeks to provide insights that can enhance the understanding of Indonesian translators’ negotiation skills in translating sex-related language, particularly in collaboration with editors in the publishing industry. Interviewing the actors in Indonesian publishers also helps to uncover the trends of teenlit and YA novel publication in the country to understand the societal norms and cultural considerations, including (self-)censorship, at the time of publication.
