America's democracy needs to change to the times. As more and more people moved to the cities, systems such as the electoral college have become more and more un-democratic, heavily over-weighing people in less populous states. We have also seen less the savory influences from special interests who seek to exercise undue control over the peoples representatives.
The Liberal Party will do everything in its power to give voices to the unheard and make sure everyone in our United States is involved in government. We want to make it easier for the people who voted for us in office to contact us, and state their opinions on recent legislation. The free exchange of ideas will not be hindered by our representatives in government nor by party officials. Healthy discussion of the issues is not just a core tenet of liberalism, but key to the functioning of our party and government more broadly.
The Liberal Party supports a major reform to or abolition of the electoral college. It has become a hindrance on our democracy rather than something which enables its smooth function.
Capture of government officials by special interests can lead to cronyism and economic inefficiency. It hurts both the American people and undermines the legitimacy of the government which is supposed to represent them. That said, special interests are an important part of our democracy and can offer valid arguments over particular issues, so their influence is not entirely derided here. The Liberal Party would support a constitutional amendment which limits the amount special interests could donate to political campaigns and extend the length former government workers have to wait before entering lobbying.
