A Subject Matter Expert is someone with special knowledge or experience relating to a particular subject who shares this knowledge with others.
For instance, an SME could have several years of experience with of a company's internal payroll platform. If the company needs to update its training materials related to payroll, the SME can provide this information to the creators of the new materials.
The range of possible subjects is endless. An SME could be an expert in painting techniques of the Italian Renaissance who verifies the authenticity of museum pieces or someone with the ability to translate an ancient language for a textbook.
I believe that people should try to garner skills in multiple disciplines, no matter how unrelated they may seem. One way or another, niche interests will have their openings. After all, good design and clear communication are what make websites engaging.
The coexistence of technology with art, language, and history is the root of every assignment I have completed for the MSIT program. Art and websites can overlap. Learning the history of a software language can be as important as using it. The IT field needs the creativity encouraged by the Arts and Humanities throughout the life-cycle of a system or program.
