Teaching Goals

1. Provide specific and consistent feedback in a timely manner based on strengths and areas of improvement.

Plan: I plan to give feedback in a variety of ways throughout my residency year. First, I plan to give feedback to students that I precept on rotation all throughout the month and not just at the midpoint and final. Second, I will give feedback to students that I teach in recitation in the fall after each case they present or SOAP note they turn in. I will also give feedback to my co-residents on their grand rounds presentations. I will also give feedback to my preceptors each month about the rotation. The feedback provided will be targeted to the person’s strengths and weaknesses.

Timeline: December 2017

Methods of measurement: Self-made evaluation assessing given feedback, self-reflection on evaluation forms provided to peers and preceptors assessing grand rounds presentations

Strengths: Punctual, very detail oriented

Weaknesses: Fear of being “too harsh”, seeing good parts of a presentation/assignment over the parts that need improvement

Contingency plan: If I do not complete this goal by the timeline mentioned above, I will re-evaluate how I am giving feedback by for example, asking the student to tell me how my feedback can be better and more effective. I will also look over PowerPoint presentations from the teaching certificate program for a refresher on giving feedback.

2. Effectively incorporate different teaching modalities into presentations and discussions based on individualized student learning styles.

Plan: Over the year I plan to incorporate visual, auditory, and active learning into topic discussions I will lead monthly with pharmacy students. I also will incorporate questions into presentations I give (ex: in services, grand rounds) to keep the audience engaged. I will use different learning styles while having a student on rotation during one on one teaching opportunities.

Timeline: March 2018

Methods of measurement: Interaction of the audience, evaluations done by self and students that assess effectiveness of using different learning styles

Strengths: Enjoy interaction with students and other healthcare professionals, creative, past teaching experience

Weaknesses: Lack of experience incorporating active learning activities

Contingency plan: If I do not complete this goal by the timeline mentioned above I see it being due to time restrictions. To overcome this I will set aside time on the weekend before an active learning opportunity to give myself ample time to plan out an activity. If it is due to not being able to come up with active learning ideas I will listen to lectures or certain CE on the topic.

3. Assess and adapt to knowledge base of the audience by asking open-ended and engaging questions.

Plan: I will practice this goal in a variety of areas including during recitation, topic discussions, grand rounds, in-services, and in one on one teaching on rotations. I will ask students on rotations their interests and try to fit those interests into the rotation. In topic discussions, I will ask multiple questions to figure out the beginning knowledge base of the students and then allow them to lead most of the discussion. I will escalate discussion based on student responses to challenge them.

Timeline: March 2018

Methods of measurement: Pre and post quiz for one-on-one teaching experiences, self -reflection of topic discussion success

Strengths: Good listener, very observant

Weaknesses: Developing critical thinking questions, getting the audience to want to interact

Contingency plan: If I do not complete this goal by the timeline mentioned above or if I feel like I am still not able to assess and adapt to my audience after multiple topic discussions, etc. I will refer to previous teachers I have had for tips on this topic. I will also look over the PowerPoint presentation from the Teaching Certificate Program covering how to ask effective questions.
