Selective Experiences

Reflection Discussion Co-Facilitator

  • October 9th, 2017 from 12:00 -1:00 PM
  • In this selective teaching experience I led a group discussion for P1, P2, and P3 students along with a faculty member. The discussion allowed pharmacy students among different classes to gather together and share ideas, advice, and to get to know each other. Time was spent asking questions regarding career goals, personal and professional growth, and inter-professional experiences. Below, see the handout and PowerPoint slides that were developed by UAMS faculty that were used during the discussion and have been included for context.
  • Reflection of activity: This selective experience allowed me to speak with a group of pharmacy students in all classes. It was neat to hear different student perspectives and how students were involved or wanting to get involved in their college of pharmacy. I was able to talk to students about what may set them apart as leaders and talk a little bit about being a resident. Looking back on this experience, I would have liked to be sitting at the table with all of the students. Instead, when I was speaking I was standing in front of the room at a podium, which I believe made the discussion seem more formal and not as comfortable for the students.

Pharmacotherapy BEERS Criteria Workshop

  • January 4th, 2018 from 1:30 - 3:30 PM
  • This activity included a mixture of 17 P4 and M4 students. I completed this teaching activity along with a pharmacist faculty member. At the beginning of the session, the faculty member presented a PowerPoint that was a brief overview of the BEERS criteria. After this presentation, I led the group in an interdisciplinary workshop. I split the students up into 3 groups and gave each group 3 patient cases. Each case had a blank answer sheet to go along with the case. I then facilitated questions during and at the end of the session and each group presented the last of the 3 cases they worked on. I enjoyed seeing how different disciplines approached the cases and answered questions. Below, see the handouts and PowerPoint slides that were developed by UAMS faculty that were used during the discussion and have been included for context.
  • Reflection of activity: This was the most interactive selective experience that I was able to participate in throughout the Teaching Certificate Program. I was able to build upon interacting with large groups of students and challenge them to think critically. Typically, I give students answers to questions right away without giving them the chance to think of the answer on their own. During this session, I was able to work on leading students to answer questions on their own and giving them hints or other questions, but not the answer. The hardest part of this teaching experience was anticipating questions that would be asked from the medical students. Their questions allowed me to think on my feet and have more practice in answering unanticipated questions.

Therapeutics Exam Question Review

  • October 23rd, 2017 from 1:00 - 3:30 PM
  • This activity consisted of UAMS faculty members and PGY1 pharmacy residents from 12th Street, CAVHS, Harps Pharmacy, and UAMS. As a group, we went through an ambulatory care Therapeutics exam and gave feedback on each exam question. The topics included on the exam were asthma, COPD, women's health, gout, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, thyroid disorders, and pregnancy.
  • Reflection of activity: I greatly enjoyed this selective experience because I was able to interact with multiple residents from other programs and faculty members. It was also very interesting to see the work that goes in to making test questions for students and the statistics that lead faculty members to change questions from year to year. I also appreciated that the test questions came from more than one faculty member, so I was able to see differences in how they asked questions. I hope to apply what I learned during this exam question review in the future when precepting students and residents.

Mock Interviews

  • January 18th, 2018 from 5:00 - 6:00 PM
  • For this selective teaching experience, I participated in interviewing a P4 pharmacy student that was applying for residencies. I interviewed this student along with a faculty member and another PGY1 pharmacy resident. During this session we asked the interviewee similar questions to what may be heard during real residency interviews. We spent time giving the student feedback regarding his answers and also on his presence and professionalism during the interview. See the Mock Interview Worksheet below that was developed by UAMS and has been included for context.
  • Reflection of activity: As a student at UAMS, I was able to go through the mock interview process before applying for residencies. I remember thinking that the mock interview greatly prepared me for residency interviews and I liked how honest and encouraging the faculty members were that interviewed me. With all of that said, going into this selective experience I wanted to make sure that the student that I was mock interviewing appreciated this experience as much as I did. Through this experience I was able to further develop in the area of giving constructive and timely feedback. I also enjoyed hearing other pharmacists thoughts on the interview process and their feedback for the student.
