Since 2012 I work as a Senior Scientist at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE, Helsinki, Finland); my main task is marine biogeochemical modelling. Since 2019 I am also Adj. Prof. in Aquatic Sciences at the University of Helsinki. I have a Master in Biological Oceanography (2005, Tuscia University, Italy) and PhD in Oceanography (2009, University of Bologna, Italy).
Previously, I worked also at CMCC (Bologna, Italy), CNR (Venice, Italy), Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR, Helsinki, Finland), Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI, Helsinki, Finland), and Tallin Univeristy of Technology (Tallinn, Estonia).
Since 2006 I have been working with marine biogeochemical models, particularly focusing on ice-covered oceans ecosystems. I am fascinated by everything sea ice, especially its ecology. I am the main developer of the first stoichiometric sea-ice model (http://www.bfm-community.eu), i.e. a sea-ice biogeochemical model that through internal flexible stoichiometry aims to represent the acclimation patterns that organisms manifest in their natural environment.
My expertise includes: Marine Biogeochemical Modelling, Numerical Modelling, Sea ice, Sea Ice Ecology, Sea Ice Algae, Phytoplankton, Biological Oceanography, Climate Change, Climate Scenarios, Future Projections, Polar Oceans, Science Communication.
My skills incude: Programming, Linux, Fortran, Matlab, Phyton, R, Parallel Computing, Fieldwork, Ship-based work, Lab work, Scuba diving, Speaking.
