Graphic scores are a way of visualising and performing music, without having to read a stave. They can be interpreted in many different ways, as they do not have notes. Composers use graphic scores to convey and express musical ideas that cannot be described in traditional music notation. Graphic scores are also referred to as 'Pictures of sound'.
Here is a graphic score. It has similarities to traditional music notation, because there is a stave of three lines.
On this score, the sounds are written. For example, on the last line there is a big WHREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. There are also images such as a door on the top line and doodles on the bottom line.
Graphic scores are very useful as they are the only way of expressing musical ideas that cannot be described in traditional music notation.
