🇧🇷 Brazil: Loot Box Public Interest Litigation
June 2026: The judgments in nine cases against video game companies and storefronts (including all industry leaders) before the 1st Court of Childhood and Youth of the Federal District of the Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories cited with approval a research study and guidance document issued by the federal judiciary (“Nota Técnica CIJDF nº 9/2023”; detailed below) in relation to the point that loot boxes are gambling-like, including “the set of studies compiled [therein],” which included my own on the different categories of loot boxes and their similarities to gambling: example link to the case against Riot.
March 2023: Cited by the Federal District Justice Intelligence Center, First Vice-Presidency, Federal District and Territories Court of Justice in Nota Técnica CIJDF nº 9/2023 as to how different types of loot boxes should be categorised and whether they are gambling-like (pp 15–17).
