Painting with Shapes

What is this?
This is a painting that depicts a bouquet of flowers in a vase. The vase was created using a sheet of construction paper; the flowers were created using folded-up scraps of paper and cardboard dipped in paint. The goal of this project was to use the paper scraps to create various petal-shaped textures. In doing this, each flower appears uniform and symmetrical. This project can be done at any grade level but is geared towards lower elementary.

Why did I choose this?
I chose to include this art project because showcases a balance between creativity and structure. Students have the freedom to create whatever shapes they would like and are challenged to create flowers that appear symmetrical. It is a great way to integrate mathematics into the art curriculum, as symmetry is a concept introduced to students in most early elementary curricula.

What did I learn?
In creating this example project, I learned how to foster student creativity by offering lots of freedom when creating art. From my EDUC-357 professor, I learned how to best organize art supplies as well as how to facilitate cleanup with children after the class period.
