What is this?
These are four beanbags made of socks filled with rice. I created them as part of a project for the PE for Children class, where we were told to make our own physical education equipment from supplies we already owned. In a lesson taught to a K-1 class, students practiced basic throwing and catching techniques in pairs with these beanbags.
Why did I choose this?
I chose to include these beanbags in my portfolio because they serve as an example of making do with what you have. You do not need fancy PE equipment to teach an effective lesson. The primary purpose of physical education is for students to get students engaged in exercise and it is possible to do that with minimal equipment along with a little bit of creativity. In addition, choosing to make beanbags was useful because they are versatile and can be used for a multitude of activities.
What did I learn?
In making and using these materials, I learned that children do not need top-quality equipment to learn PE lessons. I also learned the usefulness in numbering my supplies; at the end of the lesson, I was able to realize exactly which beanbags were missing, and which students had them. In activities where there are more than four supplies, I can imagine this is even more helpful.
