Stephen Fancsali

Stephen E. Fancsali (Ph.D., Logic, Computation, & Methodology, Carnegie Mellon University), Director of Advanced Analytics at Carnegie Learning, brings over a decade of experience in educational data science to his role as Co-PI of the Learner Data Institute. Fancsali specializes in statistical and causal modeling of data produced by learners (and teachers) as they interact with artificial intelligence (AI)-driven instructional software, including Carnegie Learning’s MATHia (formerly Cognitive Tutor) and LiveLab real-time classroom analytics app. He contributes to and oversees work including data-driven improvements to (and evaluation of) skill and mastery learning models underlying MATHia, developing student-progress monitoring metrics, deploying real-time alerts and analytics for teachers while their students use programs like MATHia, and learning causal models of learner behavior and affect in AI-driven tutors. His work has been published in the Journal of Learning Analytics and in a variety of conferences proceedings, including those of the International Conference on Educational Data Mining, Learning Analytics and Knowledge, and the Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society. Fancsali has served as co-investigator or key personnel on research funded by agencies including U.S. Department of Defense (Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative), the U.S. Department of Education (Institute for Education Sciences), Schmidt Futures, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the NewSchools Venture Fund (via an Ignite Mathematics Challenge Award).
