Summer of Rising Junior
I visited Spain and Portugal on a school trip; it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. During the time of the travel, I was taking the class Spanish 3 Honors, so I was able to communicate through my knowledge of Spanish. I used my skills as much as I could and understood what others were saying to me in Spanish. On this trip, we were able to visit Todelo, famous for its sword-making and gold jewelry. We also visited places like El Museo El Prado which was filled with beautiful art paintings and statues. We saw many different churches including the São Francisco church of Bones in Portugal. We were lucky enough to participate in two cooking classes, one in Spain and one in Portugal, and we cooked dishes famous in that country. Everything was so delicious and I was so lucky I was able to learn so much about the different countries.
Summer of Rising Senior
I traveled to Italy and Greece for almost 2 weeks in June. We visited to cities of Siena, Florence, and Rome in Italy, and Náfpilo and Athens in Greece. While visiting Italy we explored sites like the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Duomo. We also took a cooking class and made homemade pasta and were able to see tourist attractions such as the Sistine Chapel and Trevi fountain. We were in Italy for 5 days before traveling to Greece and exploring the beaches and small town off the coast of Náfpilo. While in Greece we visited famous restaurants and historical sites such as Zeus Temple and Corinth Canal. We then ventured to Athens where we explored the city itself and saw churches, areas where historical artifacts are buried, and the grounds where the first Olympics were held. We did most of our traveling on foot so we were able to see so much of the cities just by taking the back alleyways and exploring the towns. We were able to meet locals from the countries while on our tours and were able to hear about their lives in either Italy or Greece and a deeper meaning to the historical backgrounds. I was so lucky to experience two more countries because of Global Scholars and able to connect with the people by learning the language and experiencing the culture.
Juniors and Seniors in Global Scholars went on a "field trip" to New York City for the day and visited the MoMA, different parts of the city where we experienced cross-cultural food, and saw students from Penn express their different cultures and perform their style of song or dance. The MoMA was incredible seeing so many famous works of art from diverse artists, learning more about artists like Frida Kahlo, and seeing more of her work. The MoMA had visual but also 3D art which I also found very fascinating. We walked around and visited a village where different cultures sold items like jewelry, purses, hats, and jewels. We had dinner at a Thai restaurant and walked to Carnegie Hall where we saw the students perform. There were Chinese, Latin, Korean, and many other groups of students who performed either singing, dancing, and even comedies that highlighted their ethnicity. I loved seeing all the incredible art at the MoMA and watching the students feature their cultures through something we all enjoy watching. This trip was something I am very grateful that I was able to experience with my school.
