I was allowed to be a part of ceramics in my junior year. I was so excited because not only was it a different type of art class, it was involved with Global Scholars. Throughout the year we made so many fun pieces such as Thanksgiving dishes, teacups and saucers, and feelings sculptures. Although it was so fun to make these creative pieces, there were times throughout the year when there would be a lesson involved with our project. Such as our Role Model wall hanging and our final piece. For our final project, we learned about 3 different types of cultures and art, and our assignment was to create a vase influenced by one of the types of art. For my piece, I chose the Ming Dynasty and designed my vase to capture its light brush strokes and capture its main color theme, light blue and white. I am so thankful for my teacher and this class to not only have a new opportunity but to learn more about Global Experiences through art.
Junior year was my first year being a part of Model UN. I was very interested in what the club held but due to personal reasons, I was never able to participate until 11th grade. Going into a new club junior year of high school was scary in the sense that everyone was already confident in what the club included. I was very unsure of where my place was and how I could show my perspective on the Model UN issues. After a lot of hard work and dedication, I was chosen to attend the Harvard Model UN conference. I represented the country Tanzania and my organization was the ILO (International Labor Organization) and our topic was women in the workforce. I learned so much about the country of Tanzania itself as well as their country's perspective on women in the workforce and labor as a whole. While in my conferences, I learned about different countries' perspectives on the ILO and got to work with different countries on a new program called "Swift Block" to help women both receive jobs from the ILO but secure those jobs if they have personal needs such as maternity leave or children they also need to care for. By representing Tanzania I was able to work with countries that could be viewed as "enemy countries", but we were able to work out those issues to improve the lives of women in our countries and how the ILO can have a new perspective on labor for all countries.
