Similarities with “Sisters” from Distant Cities
I participated in a GEBG Dialogue, for "The Role of Women in Society – How have things gotten better, and what challenges and opportunities do we still face?". We broke out into breakout rooms with about 6 members and we all discussed 3 topic questions and how they affected us in our personal life. Being the only one from an all-girl school, I was able to connect to these issues on a different level. I explained how I went to an all-girls school since I was 5 years old, so I have not experienced the "competitive" nature between girls and boys. I was able to speak on how I was always taught that girls can do anything boys can do and we do not have to live up to the stereotypes that are in the world today. Something interesting we talked about was female novels. I am writing my English research paper on this topic, so I was able to give my input on how women would publish their novels anonymously, so they would not receive criticism. We spoke on this topic becasue authors today, like JK Rowling, still, publish novels without using their full names, so they will receive the same amount of respect a male author would. I enjoyed this dialogue because this is a topic that I feel very strongly about.
Mental Health in School:
I participated in a GEGB about Mental Health in school. I was able to hear from students who have a strong opinion about Mental Health from places around the country such as California, Mississippi, and New York. We all gave our opinions about how mental health is present in our schools and outside lives. We discussed how our schools handle mental health and how it impacts us as students. Another topic we discussed is how our parents impact us in school and how it affects our mental health. We talked about how we work so hard to please our family or "compete" with our friends over grades, but the only person we need to think about is ourselves and how much pressure we put on ourselves. Something else we discussed on Zoom is how teachers respond to mental health. An example of this included a student with a learning disability having the extra time or being able to go to a separate room to take a test. Meanwhile, there could be students struggling with anxiety or ADHD who may need that extra time or separate space as well so they can have the same opportunity to succeed as everyone else. It was so nice to talk about how stressful school can be with students my age who are dealing with similar experiences. We all reminded ourselves that we were all trying too hard in school and that although we might not have done as well as we thought we would, we still tried and gave the best effort we could, and that was enough!
Gender Roles in School
I was able to participate in a Global Dialogue with GEBG about Gender Roles in Schools. It was an eye-opening experience for me because I have gone to an all-girl school my whole life, so it was interesting to hear from girls who are dealing with the struggle of gender exclusion in their daily life. I spoke with students from all over the country who were originally from countries like India and Vietnam, so they were able to share their different experiences from their Native Country and the United States. Going to an all-girl school my whole life I was not as aware of this problem as the rest of the students who went to co-ed schools. I did however share my experience with a brother who goes to an all-boy school and how schools treated us and our school work differently. I enjoyed sharing how frustrating it can be to work so hard in school to succeed, but boys, especially if they are athletes, receive an easier route with their work which is less stressful. Hearing about how these girls are affected every day by these Gender Roles inspired me to try and make more of a difference in my life by not comparing myself and my work to my brother, but appreciating that I am viewed as more capable. Also hearing from a boy's perspective was interesting because they are not as aware of this problem as girls are, but hearing from a girl's point of view helped them want to bring more awareness to this topic in their schools.
I was honored to be chosen to represent Notre Dame in a GEBG Dialogue on AI Technology. I was chosen from a group of Student Leaders from the GEBG's student leadership council to write an introduction and discussion questions on why I think AI technology is important and the world today. I met with the head of the GEBG SLC and discussed my work with AI and what questions I will be using in my Dialogue. My main focus was "AI on the Global Scale" and how it was not only affecting the Earth but the lives of humans as well. I was able to host a dialogue with the help of Notre Dame students as teachers with over 80 students around the world. I learned their perspectives on AI technology and it affects both their school and personal life. I think that the dialogue was a success because there was a follow-up GEBG dialogue on the topic of AI technology. Although it was on different sub-topics I was able to use the information I learned in preparing for my dialogue to help facilitate more students on AI technology. I am so lucky that I was chosen for this opportunity and I was so happy that all my hard work was worth it for the dialogue to be a success.
AI Technology
I participated in a GEBG Dialogue on AI Technology in both school and work environments. Because of the Student Leadership Council, I am a part of, I was one of the student facilitators who helped run the dialogue. Because I previously did my dialogue on AI technology, I was already informed on the topic of AI. Though, I enjoyed talking to others on this topic and how it is present in our lives. I learned that every school has a different approach to AI technology, such as at Notre Dame we are encouraged to use Grammarly to help us write our essays. However, one of the students I was in a breakout room with discussed how they are not allowed to use any sort of spell check online resource in their school life. Although I can see how AI can be viewed as a negative factor in school due to the possibility of plagiarism, I do feel as though it is important to use resources wisely to give students as much help as they can to help them succeed in school. I was in a breakout room with about 6 other students, but it allowed us to share our opinions and listen to everyone's perspective on AI technology. Working with this topic before definitely gave me more knowledge than I would have had to go into this dialogue. I also enjoyed being a student facilitator because I know how stressful it can be to find student facilitators to help when hosting a GEBG dialogue. So I am glad I was able to help another SCL member and continue to discuss a topic that is becoming more present in our lives.
I was one of four students to attend the final Student Leadership Conference of the school year. We discussed a plan for next year to continue to SLC to the rising Juniors or returning Seniors. We talked about our final thoughts and decisions for our book that is soon going to be published about our Global Program. As a contributor to the book it was so exciting to see that it was moving along and will soon be out for publication. We discussed our final thoughts on the school year and looked back on what we were able to accomplish. Being one of the students chosen to create a Global Dialogue, I felt nothing but gratitude for the environment I was given to not only host the call but have fellow members of the Student Leadership Conference support my accomplishment. The same goes for the other students who I was able to help by supervising breakout rooms of their Global Dialogues and contributing what I knew about the topic creating discussion throughout the Zoom call. Meeting so many students through SLC who have the same goals as myself was so inspiring to continue into my senior year. Carrying the support from the staff, especially Chad Detloff, and all of the students I was able to work with from all over the world including California, India, and Canada. I was able to share my hard work and thoughts about my Global Dialogue topic (AI technology on the Global Scale) with students all over the country and the world through a Zoom call. I am so lucky I get to share my experience with the girls next year who will also be a part of the SLC and hopefully inspire them to want to host their Dialogue as well.
