2022, Sophmore Year
I was able to participate in two out of the three Pen Pal meetings which allowed Notre Dame students to interact with girls our age from Singapore. I was in a breakout room with two girls from Singapore who were seniors and 3 girls from Notre Dame who were in my class (sophomores). We were able to talk about our lives and how they are similar and different and discuss what life is like at our age in the country we are from. We talked about our schools and what academics are like, what we like to do in our personal lives, and the type of dictatorship in our country and how it differs. One example that we discussed of how our lives differ is that when they are finished with college in Singapore, they move back in with their parents until they are 35, unlike the USA's tradition of moving out of our parent's house when we are 18 to go to college. I was unable to participate in the second meeting due to spinal fusion surgery that I received only 2 days before, but although I missed that opportunity I was still able to get to know the girls and participate in this program. My group was able to revive the two girl's social media so we could still stay in touch with each other after the third meeting. This was an incredible cross-cultural experience that had a major impact on my perspective on how we all had similar experiences with school and personal lives although we come from 2 very different parts of the world.
War in Ukraine:
This was an amazing experience for me becasue I got to speak with kids from all over the world about a very important topic in our world today. I spoke with kids from India, Turkey, and California and it was so interesting to learn about all their different perspectives on the Russian and Ukraine War. Something that I found very interesting was to hear one of the girls in my group, who was from India, speak about how India does not want to take sides so that they do not start another World War. Some of the girls from California as well as myself, all spoke about how the USA has been very vocal about supporting Ukraine and we all shared ways our school has been able to help. We all agreed that this topic is not spoken about as much as it was when the war first happened. Because of this, we all thought of ways we can continue to help Ukrainians, so there can be peace in our world again.
I was able to participate in the 2023 STEM Symposium hosted at Notre Dame. There were girls from all over the world including Peru, London, Argentina, Japan, and Tiwone. I specifically bonded with the girls from Peru. The girls I talked to were around my age and were so excited to be in America and at our school. We talked about everything including the classes we take in school, our favorite foods, and jewelry. They are not allowed to wear jewelry at their school so that is why they were so surprised when we all had earrings and bracelets on. Something I enjoyed learning about was that they learn four different languages in school starting when they are in first grade. Because I recently returned from Spain, I tried my best to speak with them in Spanish. They had to speak slower but we were able to have conversations, and we also spoke a little in French because that is another language they learn to speak. It was so nice to talk to those girls about everything from serious issues to our favorite books. We all received each other's social media so I am still able to keep in contact with them and we can see what is going on in each other's lives. Those girls had such an incredible impact on me that I am so grateful for, and I will never forget them.
2023, Junior Year
Pen Pals is a Notre Dame tradition where students meet with our sister school in Singapore. I was able to be in a breakout group with three girls from the St. Nicholas school and we we able to talk about everything! We were able to relate to so many things in our lives and learn what makes us all the same and what makes us all different. Reagan Cunningham and I were able to host one of the girls on our call, so during our Zoom meetings we discussed that upcoming event. We met with the girls after Thanksgiving so we talked about what our holiday represents and talked about how when the girls arrived, everything would be ready for Christmas. We also informed the girls about daylight savings and the temperature difference between the East Coast of the United States which is cold in the winter compared to Singapore which is 90 degrees all year. Having to meet 2/3 of the girls online was an incredible experience and we had such a strong bond from the first time we met in person.
I was able to host a student from Singapore who I was recently on Zoom calls with at school with other girls from Global Scholars. I can say that this was my favorite Global Scholars event I have ever participated in. It was so amazing to meet the girl I was talking to three weeks previous to their arrival. I also hosted with a Notre Dame student who was also on our calls. We showed them around the school, took them to our classes, and showed them what a day looks like in the United States. One of their favorite things was how spaced out our schools were and the beautiful architecture. They were impressed that we know so many students from various grades and that we have a little more freedom than most private schools. We talked to them about our school traditions, extracurriculars, and our daily routines. We were able to interact with other students from the Saint Nicholas school throughout the day and brought the students around the school to talk to different teachers and students about their school lives. It was such an incredible experience and I am so glad I still keep in contact with her! I was able to learn so much about Singapore and how our lives are so similar but still different.
