I was part of a team of volunteers through DesignXHumanity who created a mini-course called the Impact of Language as part of a project for UNITAR. In this course, we created two modules: a module on gender-inclusive language, and a module on racially inclusive language. The modules follow the learning journeys of four characters, educators in different teaching contexts, who want to create more inclusive classroom environments. In these modules, learners learn about a variety of topics such as gender identity, understanding inclusive language, and microaggressions. Learners can then practice what they have learned through knowledge checks and scenarios. Through the process of designing these course, we met weekly with the Product Management and Development team to discuss the storyboard, review the content, and assign next steps.
Challenges:
Struggling with narrowing down our target audience and choosing learner personas.
Script was quite dense and too detailed.
Solutions:
Incorporated characters from OpenPeeps and to focus on educators from different teaching backgrounds.
Created a storyboard which comprised images, and reducing the amount of text so that it wouldn't overwhelm the learners.
Designed scenarios with short dialogues to make the the experience more authentic and relevant to learners
Results:
We presented our progress during biweekly Sprint Reviews, and we were able to incorporate feedback to improve each iteration of the course.
During the final Sprint Review, we received positive feedback from the Quality Assurance Team. The next step will be to share our course with educators so that they can use it for professional development.
