Another Gahnia seen in Le Roys
Mapere (Gahnia xanthocarpa)
This fine specimen was reported by the weed control contractor who is working for us under an Auckland Council Environmental Improvement Fund grant.
For more information about mapere (Gahnia xanthocarpa), see http://nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=1908
A good plant for stony dry areas - Tarangarara (Gahnia lacera)
Has tufted glossy tussock-like growth - up to 1.5m high and 2m in spread. Gather the seeds in January/early February and sprinkle on dry stony sites.
Sprinkle lots of seeds - because most are just chaff and don't grow.
For more information about Tarangarara (Gahnia lacera) see: http://nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=1903
Photo from the fascinating Piha site - http://www.piha.co.nz/native-plants-o-t/ under Tatangi well worth a visit.
For more information see also Oratia Natives
The suggestion came from Paul - the volunteer and biodiversity coordinator for Auckland North.
Toatoa (Haloragis erecta)
This 1 metre high shrub found growing around the Glade Place to Valley Road bridge doesn't look like a traditional NZ native.
It has started spreading along the path from Glade Place.
