Organizing our Kitchen

The kitchen is a very busy spot in our classroom! The children play in there everyday in a variety of ways. Consequently, it has become quite disorganized and difficult to clean up. Time for some organization!

We collected everything from the kitchen cabinets and sorted them into piles based on what type of material they were (food, tool, pots/pans, etc...). This was a great physical activity since the children had to go back and forth to the kitchen to get materials, and then walk around to view the piles and see where each one fit. Once we sorted everything we checked our piles and reviewed the similar characteristics to make sure everything was in the correct place. Finally, we put materials back in a designated cabinet in the kitchen. At clean up time we checked to see that we had returned everything to its designated spot and reviewed each group's placement.

One Last Valentine's Day Art Experience

We left one last Valentine's art experience for this week! The children chose valentines or sweet treats to make, and were given cards with specific amounts of each art material to glue to the shape. The cards had either two or three items on it and the amounts ranged anywhere from 1-10. We moved through each item and had the children identify the number, count out that many items and place them on their card. This was great practice with multi-step directions and visual-spatial awareness as they placed and attached each material. Each material was also a different shape and thickness, which required different levels of fine motor strength and dexterity
