Visual Literacy fits in with Global Collaboration, Project Based Learning and Flipped Learning in that it is a major factor in creating student engagement.
In Brian Kennedy’s Ted Talk video it was amazing to learn that “30% of the brain is used for vision, we read non-text 60,000 times faster than text, and 90% of what we take in we take in visually.” In the Visual Literacy for Improved Presentations article by Rachelle Ferguson she states that “color visuals increased willingness to read, motivation, and participation by up to 80%.” Visual Literacy is a powerful tool.
Visual Literacy is a vital component to enhancing the learning in my classroom. In a media class an overwhelming percentage of the material is visual. My students enter the room with an expectation that the material and the classwork will be visually based. Without the use of Visual Literacy in the class the level of student engagement would decrease.
