Technology is extremely beneficial to use with assessments on many levels. During the assessment course I came to the realization that I need to share what I have learned with my colleagues who are working on developing flipped classrooms. The use of EdPuzzle, Pear Deck, Google Forms, and other tools can transform a lesson from a standard lecture on video to an interactive experience, representative of what we learned in our Flipped and Blended Learning unit. I saw the benefit in student engagement where the class had the alternative of a paper assessment vs EdPuzzle.
Technology allows and assists the educator in the process of evaluating what a students know, what they are struggling with, and what concepts need to be expanded on or reviewed.
I observed students paying closer attention with the use of EdPuzzle paired with videos. They were more engaged as they began to anticipate the upcoming questions and reviewed the material as needed. They preferred the video with the EdPuzzle to a paper assessment given at the conclusion of the video.
The use of Pear Deck (student paced) with the video on one slide and questions on the following slide resulted in a brief pause due to confusion. Many students did not feel confident about answering the question and went back to review the video. When they reached the second video some students strategized by previewing the questions first. The students shared that this lowered their anxiety level and they began to enjoy the experience.
The use of technology changed the timeline as to the evaluation of student understanding and proficiency. The management consoles allowed me to see which students understood the material and who needed further instruction.
It also has challenged me to discover how to use technology at an even higher level as a tool to offer students choices, encourage them to develop stronger thinking skills, and to create engaging assessments for the students.
Allowing students to use technology for formative assessments mimics the increased energy of the learning that occurs when technology is used to enhance the learning experience.
