For nearly 10 years I kept two figures on my desk to remind me that all students can learn and that all lessons should be nutritious and delicious.
I practice
ESL in every lesson
#TESOL Certificate
I've been teaching English Langauge Learners for 18 years and it shows.
Wait time. Think, pair, share. Graphic organizers. Sentence frames. Paragraph frames. Posters. Syntax surgery. Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms. Morph house. Pronunciation practice: speed drills, tongue twisters, minimal pairs. Chants. Songs. Gestures.
All these strategies -- and more -- help my students retain their lessons. They also make learning more fun!

I believe
All students can learn
#Believe #Achieve #Succeed
My grade 3 math students showed an amazing 12-point growth on the most recent MAP test despite Covid quarantine interruptions. My Learning Support Students and struggling readers showed similar growth.
Here's why that happened:
I analyze data to know where they are and what they need to do next. I plan ahead using data. I also differentiate classwork and independent practice for students who are beyond or below the rest of their classmates.
I use the teacher's edition, the pacing guide, and the learning targets. These tools made it easier for me to scaffold instruction and differentiate practice.
I connect skills and knowledge to their daily lives.
I connect ideas across the curriculum whether it's visualizing in reading or math, or if it's using fraction circles to tell time on an analog clock.
I hold private conferences with students who need extra support beyond the material or to catch up with the material.
Thanks to administrative support, I understood what motivated students to do their best. I was able to quickly adapt to cultural norms in the region and connect with parents to foster academic success.
I believe
Character Counts!
#Social #Emotional
The last three academic years have been tough on everyone. Social-emotional learning in my classroom isn't in the teacher's edition. It's in my heart.
I want children to feel safe in my classroom to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. I want them to feel comfortable in their relationships with each other too.
Each child has a unique view of themselves and the world they live in. I want to guide them toward a deeper understanding of respect for themselves and the world around them.
Character traits that are important to me are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, best efforts, fairness, caring, and kindness. These are the traits I want my students to know about by the end of the school year.
I use
Educational Technology
#CTAP1&2 #LoadingGoogle #DigitalCitizenship
Technology is a great tool, but not such a great teacher.
I love technology! I like learning it. I love using it! It makes teaching and learning a richer and more engaging learning experience. But it cannot replace human connections.
As a teacher, it's my job to help children learn. They ask questions. I use technology to help me research and practice, so I'm prepared to support them. If one strategy doesn't work, I adjust and try another. With these interactions I begin to understand them, so I can reason with them, giving empathy and compassion, and sometimes social guidance.
That's my job and I love to do it -- connecting with students so they get the most out of their learning experiences.
