Small-Group Instruction
I enjoy using this strategy with my students because it allows me to get to know students on a more personal level while improving academic achievement. This strategy works best when it's part of the school's daily instructional minutes plan.
C.H.A.M.P.S.
When students know the routines of what, why, where, and how to do activities, the classroom environment becomes more productive.
In my classroom you'll see...
personal whiteboards for students to make quick responses. This helps me read the room.
popsicle sticks. These help me call on students randomly. Sometimes I need to control the speed or level of the class so I put symbols at the top of the popsicle stick to help me differentiate.
think, pair, share. Students will summarize or explain why or how something works so they're making a deeper connection. They practice with a buddy before speaking to the whole class. This lowers the affective filter (aka reduces the fear factor).
posters, posters, posters on my wall. They go up when students are ready for the information. They're not just decorative; they're informative.
cooperative groups with role cards encourage collaboration. Sometimes they're homogenous and sometimes they're heterogeneous. Kids rotate through groups to help them grow and remain interested.
sentence starters, sentence frames, and paragraph frames that encourage students to construct and share their ideas.
role cards in groups help kids know what to do. These assignments mean everyone is productive. Rotating roles means everyone gets a chance to do each role.
conversation sentence starters to help students have meaningful discussions. These sentence frames help students gather ideas, agree and disagree on ideas, to summarize ideas, and more.
