During pandemic and shelter-in-place, I discovered a wide, international community of musicians who stream live performances on reddit RPAN and Twitch.
Since it wasn't safe to have concerts in real life, I wanted to host a virtual concert. I organized a group of performers and collaborators to put on fundraiser concerts. Our community, TodayLand, is an online crew that supports musicians and raises money for charitable causes. We've held two major fundraisers, one for Doctors Without Borders, and one for The Organization for Autism Research. To date, our all-volunteer effort has raised over $12,000!
Nerd Nite is a low-key monthly lecture series held in cities around the world. Invited speakers give a short presentation on a topic they care about, in front of a live audience at a bar. I've participated in two Nerd Nite East Bay events.
My first talk all the way back in 2015, I discussed swallowing: how it works, what can go wrong, and what I as a speech and swallowing therapist do to treat it. Here I am on stage explaining the phases of swallowing!
During a hike in the Sunol Wilderness (Ohlone land) I found a tick biting my leg. This encounter inspired me to learn more about these strange creatures. My second Nerd Nite presentation in 2018 was "Tick Talk". I discussed the natural history of ticks and Lyme disease and how the story of ticks intersects with climate change and conspiracy theories.
Over the summer of 2020 I developed a short presentation to teach my fellow classmates about how to read and interpret lab values and how lab values can inform your nursing assessment. Click here to access a zoom recording of the presentation (password: Gj%Y1o5S)
