Hello all. My name is Lauren, but everyone calls me Lo. I'm originally from New York, and even though I've lived in Oakland for over 11 years, I still have plenty of feisty East Coast energy. I'm ready to bring my energy to the nursing profession.
I aspire to become a nurse practitioner and after that a nursing instructor. My teaching philosophy blends aspects of social and constructivist theories, such as Daniel Kolb's Theory of Experiential Learning. I believe people learn best when they are allowed to interact with others and with the material using multiple modalities. I deeply appreciate the role of personal reflection as a learning tool.
Professionally, I worked as a speech-language pathologist for ten years, focusing on geriatric adults with language and swallowing disorders. While I loved my work and my clients, I wanted to expand my scope to work with patients more holistically. I felt that nursing would allow me to treat patients as a whole. I've found it especially fulfilling and meaningful to work with clients at end-of-life. I hope to pursue a career in palliative care or hospice, with a focus on holistic and psychedelic nursing care.
Social justice and environmental justice causes are very dear to me. I believe that we cannot have a healthy society if the systems that control our lives are sick.
Here I am with some fellow SFSU nursing classmates at a health care worker and Black Lives Matter protest in San Francisco (summer 2020) demonstrating against police brutality.
As a person with privilege, I hope to use my power to advocate for equity and justice for all people. I'm especially passionate about improving the quality of healthcare for people with communication disorders, like aphasia, who receive lower quality care and have worse outcomes.
