What to teach in science?
When people think about the idea of science as a subject, there seem to be many various paths to choose from to learn about. However, it is important for parents and students to realize that there are four main branches of science. The first branch is Earth/Space Science. Earth/Space Science refers to the interconnections between the ocean, land, atmosphere, and life of Earth. More specifically, students will learn about carbon rock and water cycles that influence and sustain Earth today. The second branch is engineering. Engineering Science is concerned about the mathematical and physical attributes of machines and technology. These components can also be in regard to electronics, computers, materials, and nuclear/electronic mechanical engineering. This part of science discovery meets the needs to the needs of consumers. Physical Science is the third branch of science. Physical Science refers to the study of nonliving natural substances that varies from topics of chemistry, astronomy, physics, and other similar subjects. Beyond these components, theories of gravity and concepts of energy are also discovered. The final branch is Life Science. Life Science is a natural science that depicts areas of biology, medicine, zoology, sociology, and anthropology. These topics range from ideas associated with living organisms, as well as, life processes. The main reason why science is so important is because it can help students to develop awareness to the world they live in and to find answers to queries that they may have about how processes work and come about. By incorporating this subject into one’s world, they build a natural curiosity for the world around them. How to Assess in Science:
Just like any other subjects, assessment in science can occur in a variety of ways. Not only are formative and summative assessments vital in this subject area, but science offers another type of assessment as well. The lab component of science is a vital tool for students to gain insight on lessons and see first-hand how the material they are learning, can come about. Teachers can get an idea of how students are progressing in science by observing the student observing science. The Scientific Method provides students with a great foundation when discovering ideas. Teachers can also learn how their students are developing in the content area by the questions that they ask in regards to the material, observing them do background research towards the topic, and by constructing a hypothesis, testing their ideas, and later analyzing the data.
