Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
The artifact that is displayed is an Understanding by Design Unit Plan. This unit plan refers to a 3rd Grade Social Studies unit about the role of the President. This unit was produced to practice using the UbD framework and plan as a teacher. The details that are included in the plan are all well-detailed to portray how involved the role work of an educator is.
This experience has assisted me in gaining insight on the NCSS themes, ELA standards, and Social/Emotional Standards. The unit is composed of ten mini lessons that all relate to the main idea of the unit. The mini lessons created show an understanding to the standards, because they display knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in learning this topic.
Creating this assignment has helped me to build upon my knowledge for the UbD framework. I have also gained insight on how to reflect on my lesson by incorporating a transfer goal. The transfer goal is essential for children to walk away with. It empowers them to connect to the material and leaves a lasting impression on the covered topics. Learning these teaching methods is important to my development as an educator, because it will assist me in my lesson planning and allow me to plan for differentiation, as well as, coordinating the specific standards that need to be met. This artifact connects to my future classroom, because this work will only improve my skills in the lesson planning process.
