I'm a Puta

or growing up mixed and brown

In my mother's language Tagalog, puto is a steamed rice cake and in my father's language Spanish, puto(a) roughly translates to whore. Growing up with three languages, I made the mistake of asking my Tia to give me some puto. It did NOT go well. Although humorous now, it is a relatively benign aspect of my experience in this world.

My new body of work explores how colonialism in three countries has personally impacted the inbetween space of my brown biraciality in America.
