GRADE VIII LATIN CLASS
GRADE VIII LATIN CLASS
Grade VIII Latin is the seventh course of Latin study, for students who have completed the Third Form Latin text covered in Grade VII Latin. Based on the trivium model of teaching grammar systematically in order to facilitate retention and understanding, Grade VIII Latin is designed for grammar skills mastery and rapid recognition of inflected forms. The course introduces students to the Fourth Form Latin text, which continues their journey of Latin grammar by reviewing all material in First, Second & Third Form texts covered during the previous three years, fostering the mastery of:
The locative case
Relative and interrogative pronouns
Participles, infinitives, gerunds, & gerundives
Deponent verbs
Irregular verbs, including eo, fero, and volo
Syntax: relative clauses, sequence of tenses, indirect questions, indirect statements (accusative with infinitive), gerundive of obligation
Fourth Form Latin Student Text contains thirty-six concise two-page lessons offering a systematic presentation of grammar in five logical units and includes appendices with English grammar, prayers, conversational Latin, and an extensive vocabulary index.
The text is supplemented with special songs, poems, historical literary/scientific excerpts, quotes & phrases according to the day's feast in the liturgical calendar. This interdisciplinary approach offers students an opportunity to reflect on the role of language in relation to concepts studied in other academic subjects.
The class caters to students who are continuing to practice their English grammar skills as they learn Latin. Its goal is to reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of English speech while reviewing and introducing new Latin vocabulary and grammar forms. In succession to the material covered in Grade VII Latin, the course continues to ground the fundamental concepts of English grammar, the key to Latin study.
