GRADE 2 LATIN CLASS
GRADE 2 LATIN CLASS
Grade II Latin is an introductory course for young Latin scholars, consisting of twenty-five chapter lessons from the class textbook, supplemented by special songs, poems, historical literary/scientific excerpts, quotes & phrases according to the day's feast in the liturgical calendar. This interdisciplinary approach offers students an opportunity to reflect on the role of language in relation to concepts studied in other academic subjects. Each lesson covers:
Five vocabulary words with corresponding English derivatives
Grammar basics
A practical Latin phrase
One line of a prayer
The exercises in each lesson provide constant review of materials learned throughout the course. Every five lessons, students review the material and take a test (complete with key) to ensure mastery. Phrases covered in each lesson will include a cursive writing practice page. The cursive practice page from Lesson I is shown below.
The class text is Prima Latina, which is specifically designed for students who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace and learn English grammar in the process. Its goal is to teach and reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of English speech while introducing Latin. It introduces half of the vocabulary from next year's Grade III Latin course's Latina Christiana text, while grounding the fundamental concepts of English grammar, the key to Latin study.
