Word Rating Surveys

Did you know that we spend just about 1/4th of a second in reading a word? Or that we can actually detect the presence of a word or get influenced by it in around 1/50th of a second?

Reading words or taking decisions based on them is one of the fundamental skills that we learn growing up...which determines not only our literacy but also how far in life we can go...

Consequently Visual Word Recognition is one of the most researched areas in whole of Cognitive Psychology.

Researchers measure the performance of individuals for recognising or reading words by measuring the time in milliseconds that they take in reacting to the presented word and taking a decision, let's say that whether the presented stimulus is a meaningful or a non-sense word!

Several years of research has shown that the time that people take in deciding for a word is influenced by a range of variables like word frequency, i.e. the number of times a given word is encountered in a language, word familiarity, i.e. the extent to which language users know and use the word in their everyday life, concreteness i.e., the degree to which a word refers to an instance that can be experienced through the senses, valence i.e., whether the word is perceived as positive or negative etc.

While there is knowledge about these characteristics of words from several languages like English, Dutch, German, French, Chinese, Malay etc. we do not have such information about words from Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu etc. The lack of the availability of information about these features have not allowed researchers from India to understand and investigate word reading and other questions about Indian languages.

To address this, we would need your help! Information about some of the very important characteristics of words that are very useful in studying how we read words can be measured just by asking people about how they feel about these characteristics.
