ผ้าไหมยกดอกลำพูน เป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว เกิดจากกระบวนการทอผ้าที่ซับซ้อน ต้องอาศัยทักษะ ความชำนาญของช่างทอเป็นอย่างสูงเอกลักษณ์ของผ้าไหมยกดอกลำพูนอยู่ที่ลวดลายยกนูนบนผืนผ้าที่สามารถสัมผัสหรือมองเห็นได้ชัดเจน ด้วยเทคนิคการทอที่เรียกว่า "การยก" คือการยกบางเส้น และข่มบางเส้น จนเกิดเป็นลายนูนขึ้น หรือจะใช้ ดิ้นเงิน ดิ้นทองพุ่งเพิ่มเข้าไปในการทอ ก่อให้เกิดลวดลายนูนเด่น สีสันงดงามตามที่ผู้ทอกำหนด ถือเป็นเอกลักษณ์ความสง่างามจนยากที่จะหาผ้าชนิดไหนมาเทียบความสง่างาม และวิจิตรตระการตา เช่น ผ้ายกดอกลำพูนได้เลย ผ้ายกดอกลำพูน จึงนิยมนำมาใช้ตัดชุดเพื่อสวมใส่ในงานพิธีสำคัญต่าง ๆ อาทิ งานแต่งงาน งานราชประเพณี หรือ งานที่ต้องการความหรูหราสง่างามของผู้สวมใส่
