Dear Families,
We are now at the end of our 2nd term of the school year, and the time has once again flown in. We have contended with an ongoing pandemic, Storm Arwen swiftly followed by Storm Barra, and we are emerging with smiles on our faces into an uncertain Christmas period - but I am sure all pupils and staff are looking forward to the rest, as they have most certainly earned it!
Thank you so much for all the kindness, support and perseverance you have all demonstrated since August - it has once again not been a straightforward term but I am grateful on a daily basis for the resilient, inventive and empathic members of staff and the supportive families we have at school who keep doing their best for our learners no matter what.
On Tuesday 21st December we will be getting the pupils together outdoors for a socially-distanced singalong, which will be a lovely end to the term, and remind us of the importance of gathering where we can whilst proritising safety.
We hope that, whatever your plans this festive season, that you get the opportunity to spend some quality time with your families and emerge ready as you'll ever be for 2022.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best Wishes,
Andy Murray, Headteacher
Christmas Parties
All children have now enjoyed their Christmas Parties - Nursery even had a special visitor who came into the playground to speak to the school children too! See photos of Santa's visit @lairhillockps on twitter https://twitter.com/home
We must say a huge 'thank you' to our Parent Council for providing the food (and to Mrs Trilk and Mrs Wilson for bagging and distributing it at warp speed!)
Foodbank Friday
We held a whole school Foodbank Friday on 17th December, and as ever our school community gave so generously. Next term we have lots of Foodbank Friday dates (detailed below) but please remember that items can be placed in the Foodbank collection station at any time.
Class News
In Term 2 P1 were learning about celebrations, festivals and memorable moments. We made a beautiful field of 3D poppies to go with the script the class created using our own words for the CBeebies remembrance animation.
We recognised the importance of the festival of lights in Diwali and created Rangoli patterns.
We have been rehearsing well for our nativity and are now getting into the Christmas spirit.
P1/2 all ready for their first dress rehearsal Nativity performance - Mr Murray inadvertently photobombing!
Primary 2 have been very busy this term. As well as rehearsing ‘Wriggly Nativity’ with P1 they have been learning about Forces and magnetism. Next term they will be applying their knowledge and understanding by designing and marketing a magnetic toy! Mrs Begg has introduced the class to coding and they have had a lot of fun with programmable toys. We have enjoyed learning about measure and working with numbers to 100 and beyond in maths. The Reading Jungle is always a favourite place to spend time and we are getting very good at reading! At the moment we are enjoying Christmas crafts and activities and looking forward to the end of term. Merry Christmas!
Primary 3 have been very busy this term, learning about lots of exciting new things. At the start of term, we made some brilliant firework artwork and wrote poems about Bonfire Night. We also learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy who makes art from natural materials, and we had a go at doing this ourselves in the school garden. Our topic this term has been toys and we have learnt lots about old and new toys and how they are made. Then, we designed our own toys. This term, we have been reading The Enchanted Wood. We did some great creative writing about the story. Everyone is very excited about Christmas, so we also made Christmas decorations to put on our tree!
We have had a busy term in Primary 4! In Maths we have been working on addition and subtraction, using 2- and 3- digit numbers. We try to take Maths outside wherever possible. In writing we have been writing instructions and newspaper articles, based on our class novel, A Boy Called Christmas. We are really enjoying the story of Nikolas and the elves and can’t wait to find out who Nikolas is! The film of the book is currently in cinemas for anyone looking for a day out in the holidays.
As Nikolas used a map to find Elfhelm (home of the elves) we have been making maps of our own area, using google maps and OS maps. We have also been learning about magnetism and using magnets to make a toy which moves, using Lego and K’nex.
On Thursdays P4 have been working on measure in Maths, learning to use scales to weigh Christmas presents. They have also been learning to touch type using the website typing.com.
I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned holiday and look forward to seeing you all in January.
Primary 5
We are coming towards the end of another busy term! We began the term by looking at the very topical Cop 26. The children worked on Learning for Sustainability. This is where we focused on how their actions can make an impact on the world around them. They made a lovely display for the school to see and enjoyed learning a song about the event in Glasgow.
The children did some work around Remembrance and worked together to make a group display. They wrote some moving reflections on what it would have been like when peace was declared.
The children continue to take their roles of reporters seriously and do a good job of keeping the rest of the school up to date via our Lairhillock Express Board.
Coming to a screen near you:
Primary 6 have been very busy this term. We have been learning lots of new strategies to help us with addition and subtraction, crafting 3D shapes and challenging ourselves to improve our times tables - we love times tables tennis!
Our topic for this term is the Victorians and we have been enjoying learning all about the impact the Victorian era had on our society today. We have been Victorian inventors, journalists reporting on Queen Victoria and even historians looking at old photographs to see what life was like back then!
We have been enjoying exploring different genres of books in our reading groups too, such as non-fiction, fantasy and sci-fi.
We have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. We read the Poem 'Flanders Fields' and picked out our favourite lines to create new poems using the blackout poetry technique. We are so proud of our poems!
We are getting very excited for Christmas and created a Santa's Workshop elf display. We all created our very own elves to stick on the door and have decorated our classroom ready for Christmas. Last week we made beautiful Christmas Wreaths with Miss Rodger and Mrs Wilson!
Primary 7
The start of this term coincided with Glasgow hosting COP26, therefore P7 were going global; considering all aspects of climate change, sustainability and how human activity has contributed to greenhouse gases.
We learned what the vocabulary meant, what the leaders hope to achieve at the conference and why it is necessary - from rising sea levels on Scottish Islands to drought and crop failure. Our Global Citizens of the future also discussed the UN Sustainable Development Goals - and how climate change impacts upon their progress. We considered climate injustice, and how some countries ignore the UN Rights of the Child; due to the insatiable global demand for new tech. minerals.
We learned about the science of the carbon cycle, and how it had remained relatively balanced until the industrial revolution. Pupils then transformed into carbon atoms and bounced round the classroom - either being captured or released.
And finally, it was all brought to life. Whilst learning the theory of more extreme weather patterns, many of us also lived through the realities of storm Arwen!
Additionally, pupils participated in a live nationwide Scratch coding session to "Save the sharks" and eliminate as much plastic as possible from our oceans. Good fun, but also very fast paced - needless to say they left me standing.
We have continued the sustainability theme to finish off our maths topic on co-ordinates and position. P7 are currently working on a challenge whereby they have to problem solve as a group of environmentalists tracking illegal logging in the rainforest. The challenge allows for the application of a range of mathematical skills, in addition to communication and applying logic and reason to justify their choices. It was fascinating listening to the different choices of locations for Base Camp - all with valid reasons.
As Christmas rapidly approaches, we have of course lightened the mood. Mrs Cantley and the pupils had great fun making oobleck and exploring the weird and wonderful properties of Non-Newtonian fluids. Our pupil`s ability to plot across four quadrants now means we are creating some lovely Christmas co-ordinate pictures, and we learned some Festive French vocabulary.
All that remains to finish off this term is our joint Christmas party with p6. This of course means the traditional, ( and favourite challenge....) of every teacher - Scottish country dancing for PE!
The class have been practising hard, and out of the chaos there appears to be emerging something which vaguely resembles the Dashing White Sergeant...... We may not be ready for "Strictly" just yet, but despite P7`s protestations - everyone is smiling when dancing!
Joyeux Noel.
Our Christmas Jumper Day raised a fantastic £116.87 for Save the Children! Thank you to all who contributed.
A huge thank you to the Parent Council for their individual gifts for every single member of school staff. It is already a gift to work with all the fantastic children in Lairhillock, but these goodies are very much appreciated.
In the midst of personalised gift buying, the Parent Council also found the time and energy to organise and sell our wonderful school tea towels, set up an 'Elf on a Shelf' shop, sell lots of goodies at the 'Lairhillock Pantry' and organise an amazing raffle!
We are grateful to all the helpers who stood in the freezing cold with big smiles on their faces, and engaged brilliantly with every child. The Lairhillock Pantry brought some community spirit back to school. Many parents contributed their time and talents, and we are so grateful. We are looking forward to hearing all about the success of the fundraising, but more than anything it was a pleasure to welcome you all to the school premises to spread lots of Christmas cheer! Thank you!
Please note, school finishes on Tuesday 21st December at 3.15pm.

Car Park:
Please ensure that you always:
park in a designated space in the car park, and only drop off in the identified area
drive slowly in the car park
only cross the road at the crossings - this is really important for visibility and to model for children the safe routes in the car park
Covid-19:
We really appreciate all of the support of our families for the approach we continue to take to Covid-19. We know that sometimes it causes inconvenience, but our case numbers have remained very low relatively speaking and we wish to keep it that way!
Please remember to wear masks/face coverings in the car park area.
If you or any member of your household has the following symptoms you must follow the guidance and book a PCR test:
a new, continuous cough
high temperature/fever -
a loss of smell or taste
If any member of your household tests positive for Covid-19, the whole household must self-isolate for 10 days
We will be uploading Christmas Song performances soon to get everyone in the Christmas spirit - keep your eyes peeled for the link!
