Southern Connecticut Sibshop

The Southern Connecticut Sibshop is a group for siblings, or sibs, of children with disabilities. Siblings have unique challenges and joys that shape their life trajectories (learn more on our "Families and Disability" page). Our group of 6-12 year old sibs meets at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven on the second Friday of every month to share our experiences, support each other, and participate in fun activities like selfie scavenger hunts, cookie decorating, and a shared meal. At present, sibshops are free to attend. Please email delucaz2@southernct.edu to reserve your spot in the sibshop!

Our sibshop is nationally registered here, and we hope to expand our sibshop offerings to additional sites in central and southeastern Connecticut in the coming months.

SCCCEA

The Southern Connecticut Center for Communication and Educational Audiology (SCCCEA; said like "sea-sea") began in April 2022 as part of our Center for Communication Disorders. A collaborative effort of Dr. DeLuca and audiologist Dr. Erika Nair, SCCCEA offers comprehensive speech, language, and audiology support for children with hearing loss aged 2-5 years. SCCCEA offers individualized device management and communicative intervention and language enrichment in both individual and group settings, as well as educational and family support.

CMD GOES TO PERU

This November, four CMD students and Dr. Gusewski accompanied Nursing students and faculty under the guidance of Dr. Maria Krol, Chair of Nursing, on an interdisciplinary trip to Peru. Students were able to explore Cusco and Machu Picchu, feed alpacas, ride horses, speak Spanish, and make new friends. Our CMD team provided speech, language, and feeding intervention to disabled children in an orphanage. Students enjoyed this opportunity to connect with children, learn from local healthcare providers, and apply Spanish skills to practice!

(*Tupananchiskama means “until we meet again” in Quechua, which does not have a word for goodbye)
