I remember compiling many references for this scene because, until this point, I had never animated a sobbing character. It was challenging to portray the creases of the face and the slight rising and falling of the shoulders whenever the character took a shallow breath.
I had to redo a lot of my mannequins or messy sketches to make it feel natural for the viewer. After that process, I overlaid the model-accurate character, lined every drawing, and colored frame by frame using the fill tool. I also animated the tears shortly after the main body was complete.
