MICHIGAN CHAPTER RESTART: 2011-PRESENT
(Written by Drs. Hahnsang Kim and Benjamin Lee on June 2011 for KSEA Letters Michigan Chapter News)
The KSEA Michigan Local Chapter has had a long history but in recent years had become dormant. There had been much interest from KSEA President Jae Hoon Kim and the KSEA Membership Directors (MD) to reactivate the Michigan Chapter, particularly when MD Yoohwan Kim was able to uncover from KSEA's historical archives the Michigan Chapter's beginnings.
Short Michigan Chapter History
KSEA Michigan Chapter was developed since 1973, growing to 91 regular members and 40 student members over a score of years. Michigan Chapter actively engaged with academia (e.g., Univ. of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Michigan Technological University, etc.) and industry (e.g., GM, Ford, Chrysler, Dow Corning, Pharmatica & Upjohn Co., etc.). Also, Michigan Chapter established collaborative relationship with KPAI, resulting in joint seminars and recruiting events. Despite the combined activities, Michigan Chapter’s activities unfortunately fizzled out over the past several years. As much as such downturn, demand on a revival/reactivation drive grew, bringing in a kickoff meeting for Michigan Chapter again.
Michigan Chapter Kickoff Meeting
The collective efforts of President Jae Hoon Kim, Prof. Tom Oh from RIT, Dr. Hahnsang Kim, and Young Generation Director (YGD) Dr. Benjamin Lee, from Michigan, began with publicizing the Michigan Chapter kickoff meeting in March 2011 to the current and former KSEA members in Michigan, students, academics, and professionals both at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI and at Michigan State University in Lansing, MI, as well as professionals in automotive industry in the metro Detroit area. The goal of this event was to not only start a new YG student chapter at the University of Michigan, but also reactivate the Michigan Chapter.
The event titled "Go Blue Night: Michigan Chapter Kickoff" was held on Saturday April 9th, 2011 from 5:30-8:00 pm in the Kalamazoo Room in the Michigan League meeting center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Of the 36 who registered, approximately 30 attended, of which many were graduate and undergraduate students. Upon arrival, as attendees signed in, they were also provided with KSEA welcome gifts such as DVDs, calculators, t-shirts, and KSEA Letters magazines.
Dr. Hahnsang Kim moderated the event beginning with an opening remark and introduction of the KSEA officers in attendance which included Dr. Jae Hoon Kim, Dr. Tom Oh, and Dr. Benjamin Lee. After enjoying a catered buffet dinner, the attendees listened to a presentation of the introduction of KSEA delivered by President Jae Hoon Kim, followed by a presentation of KSEA membership benefits delivered by Dr. Tom Oh, and ending with the final presentation on the Young Generation activities and benefits by Dr. Benjamin Lee.
