Kristina Moen

On the academic job market for Fall 2027

I am a PhD student in Mathematics at Colorado State University advised by Emily J. King (CSU Math Department) and Imme Ebert-Uphoff (Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere). My primary research applies tools from geometry, topology, and statistics to study weather satellite imagery. More broadly, my academic and teaching interests explore the intersections of mathematics with science, history, and art. I received a BS in Economics and BA in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Washington and an MS in Mathematics from Colorado State University. Before graduate school, I taught high school math with the U.S. Peace Corps in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

Current

July 30, 2026: I presented an expository talk on the statistical physics approach to machine learning at the CIRA Machine Learning seminar.
June 24, 2026: I'm pleased to share that our paper, Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning : Illustrating the Use of Explainable Boosting Machines to Identify Overshooting Tops in Satellite Imagery, was published in the AMS Journal Artificial Intelligence for the Earth Systems. As a co-author, I contributed research on Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrices (GLCMs).
February 18 - August 9, 2026: I curated a math-focused art exhibition Symmetry, Structure, Space: Mathematical Visions in Art exhibition at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art. See the CSU Math Department social media story about the opening reception.

June 15 - 26, 2026: I participated in the ICTP-INdAM-SLMath Summer Graduate School for Machine Learning in Trieste, Italy and presented a research poster.
April 17, 2026: I gave a contributed talk titled "Old Masters, New Methods: Teaching Calculus Online with 18th-Century Sources" at the MAA Rocky Mountain Section Meeting "History of Mathematics and its Use in Teaching" special session in Grand Junction, CO.
April 3, 2026: I was an invited guest speaker at CSU Writes' 10 Year Anniversary Celebration of Writing. See my slides about the importance of writing for mathematicians.
April 1, 2026: My article about a student visit to NCAR was published in SIAM News.
March 3, 2026: CIRA and the CSU Walter Scott, Jr College of Engineering featured my work on their social media.
January 23, 2026: I passed my preliminary exam! I am a PhD candidate.
November 15, 2025: I moderated the team competition at CSU Math Day. Congratulations to all the student participants!
November 10, 2025: I presented a research poster at the CSU 10th Annual Graduate Student Showcase. Read a news article from the CSU Department of Atmospheric Sciences.
October 21, 2025: I gave an invited talk at the CSU Pueblo Math Colloquium and met with the Math Club students.
July 28 - August 1, 2025: I represented the CSU SIAM chapter and presented a poster at the Third Joint SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meetings (AN25) in Montreal, Quebec.
