A tankless water heater heats water as it passes through a heat exchanger. When that water contains hardness minerals, deposits can accumulate on the surfaces that transfer heat.
Over time, mineral buildup can interfere with heat transfer, restrict water passages, and contribute to performance problems. Descaling circulates a suitable cleaning solution through the isolated heat exchanger to help remove those deposits.
Maintenance should follow the requirements for your particular heater. Water hardness, household demand, equipment condition, and previous service history all affect the appropriate schedule.
For a standard, accessible unit with working isolation and service valves, a routine visit includes:
Review of the heater model, service history, and any reported problems
Inspection of accessible water connections and service valves
Heat-exchanger descaling using a cleaning solution suitable for the equipment
Thorough rinsing before returning the heater to service
Inspection and cleaning of the accessible water inlet screen, as applicable
Restart and operating check
Check for visible water leaks after service
Explanation of findings and recommended next steps
Additional maintenance depends on the model. Air-intake screens, condensate components, and other service items may require attention according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If we find damaged valves, internal leaks, missing service connections, or another condition requiring extra work, we explain the scope and price before proceeding.
Our starting price applies to routine service of one accessible tankless water heater with functioning service valves.
Missing or seized valves, multiple heaters, difficult access, repairs, replacement parts, and additional diagnostics may change the price. Send us a photo of your heater and the piping underneath it so we can help confirm the service requirements.
Clear scope. Straight answers. Pricing confirmed before work begins.

Contact Kraken if you notice:
Hot water becoming inconsistent
Reduced flow at hot-water fixtures
Recurring error codes or shutdowns
Unusual operating noises
Water leaking around or inside the unit
A heater that has missed its recommended maintenance
Service valves that are difficult to operate
These symptoms do not automatically mean the heater needs descaling. Temperature fluctuations can also involve fixture mixing, water flow, plumbing restrictions, recirculation settings, or equipment faults.
We look at the symptoms before recommending a flush, repair, or replacement.
You do not need to have purchased your heater from Kraken to request service.
We can evaluate existing installations, including equipment installed by another company. Let us know the brand and model, what the heater is doing, and when it was last serviced. Service availability and repair options depend on the equipment and its condition.
For older or neglected systems, we explain any visible concerns before starting. Descaling removes mineral deposits; it does not repair corrosion, a damaged heat exchanger, or failing components.
If your heater repeatedly develops mineral buildup, servicing the heater is only part of the conversation.
A properly sized water softener can reduce the hardness minerals entering the heater. That may help limit future scale accumulation, although the heater still needs maintenance according to its manufacturer’s requirements.
A whole-house carbon filter serves a different purpose, such as reducing chlorine taste and odor. Carbon filtration alone does not soften hard water.

Tell us your city and heater model when requesting service.
Follow your model’s maintenance instructions. Annual maintenance is a common starting point, but harder water, heavy use, or equipment-specific requirements may call for a different schedule. We can review your heater and service history to recommend an appropriate interval.
The terms are often used interchangeably. A descaling service circulates a suitable cleaning solution through the heat exchanger to remove mineral deposits, then rinses the system. Simply running fresh water through the heater is a different process.
It may help if mineral buildup is contributing to the problem, but temperature changes have several possible causes. Tell us whether the issue affects one shower or every hot-water fixture so we can evaluate the right starting point.
We first need to evaluate the plumbing. Proper service connections may need to be installed before the heat exchanger can be isolated and descaled. Any additional plumbing work is quoted separately.
Yes. Softening can reduce hardness-related buildup, but it does not replace the heater’s required maintenance. Screens, condensate components, and other equipment-specific items may still need attention.
Warranty requirements vary by manufacturer and model. Follow the applicable maintenance instructions and retain service records. A maintenance visit does not guarantee coverage for an existing or future failure.
Yes—request an evaluation and describe the symptoms. Leaks and error codes may require diagnostics or repairs beyond routine descaling. We explain the findings and available options before recommending additional work.
