In the technologically & magically advanced city of Majikkutaun, brothers Ishikawa Ezekiel (Zeke) & Ishikawa Adam begin college together; already local celebrities, as the sons of famous technology company CEO Persophia Deathling. Primed since childhood to be the heirs (Well. Heir & his backup.) of their mother's organisation, The Quantum Order, the two quickly rise through the ranks of their classes. Zeke becomes fast friends with fellow science nerd Orion Watson (Ryan), & by extension, Ryan's friends, Sanada Emiko & Yoshino Tyler. Emiko & Ryan are quick to notice something's off about Zeke's behaviour, but dismiss it as unimportant, for now.
But when Emiko, along with the kid she's been teaching, Ryan's little sibling Supernova Watson (Nova), go missing; Zeke gets dragged along for an impromptu investigation by his friends. But when their investigation leads to them breaking into the private laboratories under the Quantum Order's office; they uncover a horrifying secret- Persophia's been experimenting; & Emiko, now mutated into a Reaper Hound, was her first human test subject.
For a split second, it's silence. Then it's a mad dash for the trio; Zeke, Ryan, & Tyler to get out of there as fast as possible, escaping as Zeke uses his gun to blast a hole through the wall; the mutated Emiko chasing from close behind. It's a close call, until Nova arrives to the scene, distracting the monster long enough for the others to run out the smouldering hole left behind. Emiko's beastly form flees into the city night, too fast to run after. Nova regroups with the trio, explaining that xe'd witnessed her teacher's kidnapping & had followed to try to save her.
As Zeke, still horrified & frozen, rethinks everything he knew about his family & the technology that his mother stood for; at least he still has his friends to help, as they all form Team Chaos; resolving to track down Emiko, create an antidote, & bring her back to human form.
Meanwhile, Persophia goes home & informs Adam of Zeke's insurgence- not that she's the most... reliable source of information, but her son doesn't know that. Feeling betrayed, Adam snaps; & all the hatred that's been building up for their past entire lives boils over to the surface- & he sinks further into his mother's command.
(Chaos Before Apocalypse takes place in the same continuity as & 11 years before Dream Directorz)
(There's probably some other filler shenanigans & hijinks & one-off adventures going on, because this IS supposed to be a story about making friends & falling in love + it's a silly superhero story, but these are the more plot-heavy bits)
SEASON 1: They're in the middle of their first college year! Hoooooo boy, everything's gone to hell. Zeke is temporarily homeless before moving in with Tyler (He can't live with Persophia & Adam anymore, Emiko is missing, Ryan & Nova live with their parents so it'd be too crowded, while Tyler lived alone in a college-board-provided flat prior to all this going down). Zeke & Ryan's small crushes on each other get a boost & they start actually pining for each other, as they work together to figure out how to make an antidote for Emiko.
Zeke is freaking out for a bit wondering what Persophia's gonna tell the public, because he knows her prized son running away is exactly the sort of thing that will cause a huge scandal- until, when she makes her next big public announcement, he sees on live TV that Persophia has managed to convince the public that everything's totally fine. Ezekiel has just been taking the next step in his life by furthering his studies & staying with his friends, and she will be keeping a close eye on his next steps. This is all just a silly phase, she tells the public- much to Zeke's mortification- she'll let him be for now, but will ensure that he returns to her, eventually. But as she waits, young little Adam will be dropping out of college to be tutored privately by herself. Can't have her son being distracted, after all. Zeke quickly shuts the TV off after that.
Meanwhile, Tyler is just kinda Going Through It with his girlfriend being missing & being sad & mopey because he's not a science guy like Zeke & Ryan, so he can't do anything to help in a significant way, aside from combat & maybe being a volunteer guinea pig for their own experimental projects. Despite being very visibly a pathetic wet cat, he plasters on a smile anyways & tries to help in what little ways in can.
Basically, it's mostly monster-of-the-week shenanigans, as Persophia & Adam continue maintaining their public image as tech celebrities, all while discretely unleashing attack robots & more Reaper Hounds onto the city. Our protagonists don't really know why these attacks happen, because it kinda makes no sense for a CEO to attack her own customers' city, but they try their best to stop these attacks & protect the innocent, regardless. (There's multiple reasons, like manufacturing problems to encourage citizens to purchase more of the Order's products for protection & boosting the Order's reputation & iron-grip on the city; but it's also mainly that our heroes are being used as combat & AI training to prepare these bots for more important tasks later on.) Adam is tasked with capturing Team Chaos & appears as a reoccurring villain. All of this is happening while Zeke, Tyler, and Ryan are trying to get through their first year of college, with Zeke especially being a figure of speculation among his peers.
The Order also starts rolling out a new product called the QuantumWand, which supposedly makes casting magic easier & more convenient, but Team Chaos quickly figures out that they're actually harvesting all QuantumWand customers' magic to fuel the product's power, as well as Persophia's currently-in-progress portal; the more someone uses the wand, the more their ability to use magic on their own without the wand diminishes. Adam, oblivious to this, is given a modified QuantumWand of his own to use as a weapon during battle, which weakens part of his touch-telepathy power & ensures that he can't read Persophia's mind.
Most of the character development junk like Zeke's guilt over being a terrible person & his past deeds, Ryan's gifted student syndrome, and Tyler's "I need to be the helpful everyman otherwise I'm useless" complex, gets established, along with the foundations of their growth overcoming them, & some exploration of the interpersonal relationships between these three. Zeke & Ryan also start dating along the way, which briefly makes Tyler the awkward third wheel. Nova's also sometimes there just hangin' out, but doesn't play a big part in the story yet, aside from establishing Ryan's coddling & protectiveness.
Meanwhile, we get occasional cuts to Emiko's consciousness in a dreamworld illusion while her body's off being a wolf monster; but as idyllic as the fantasy is, the more time progresses, she starts realising something's wrong & the reality around her isn't all that it seems. She starts testing the waters herself; it's all too nice, too perfect, and bit by bit, she learns how to resist the illusion's insistence that, "absolutely nothing is wrong, it's keeping you happy, so just close your eyes & stop worrying so much! Isn't being ignorant & joyful better than knowing the truth & being miserable?"
Anyway, eventually The Order announces a new product; a two-story tall military mecha-robot called The Vanguard, supposedly made to defend the city against the recent attack-robot & Reaper Hound incidents that the public doesn't know were caused by the Order in the first place. If trial runs go well, they'll be allowed to mass-produce these for the local military to guard the city. ...Though the heavy militarisation & over-surveillance of the city makes citizens feel uneasy.
This all culminates into a season finale when Adam is entrusted with the role of the The Vanguard's pilot on the day it's due for its big, public test run; if it passes in the eyes of the city, mass production can begin. Persophia & Adam secretly collude to unleash a robot attack on the day, so Adam can use The Vanguard to swoop in & make a show out of saving everyone. This is completely unbeknownst to the public, who panic when the robots arrive. Team Chaos comes in to actually save the day, but though they're able to destroy the smaller attack robots, Adam in The Vanguard proves to be a more formidable issue.
Eventually, on the threshold of her consciousness, Emiko hears the others' cries. Realising they're in danger & she cannot afford to just sit idly by, twiddling her thumbs when there's people she has the capacity to help, Emiko finally manages to break out of the illusion, regaining control over her wolf monster body enough to fight off Adam- because the Reaper Hound form is fuelled by anger & rage, and boy, she is furious at the hands she & her friends have been dealt. After the battle, with the mech destroyed, Emiko just... stops. She gently nuzzles her snout against Tyler, showing Team Chaos she's not a threat, ....and promptly passes out. They give her the antidote to turn her back into a human while she's asleep & recovers physically.

SEASON 2: This is the period where the interpersonal drama between everyone & all the character angst is the most angsty, the intensity & stakes of their adventures start amping up a little, more people are going missing & more monsters & attack robots are being spotted; as Team Chaos, now including Emiko, realises the hounds are searching for the Singing Spheres- five of the most powerful magical artefacts around the world to power Persophia's portal (*cough* *cough* stealing them from where they actually belong *cough* but also if this was an actual series it'd give me an excuse to take the characters out exploring *cough* *cough*), but the device Persophia & Adam are using to track these artefacts down takes weeks, if not months to recharge. Emiko & Tyler put their relationship on hold for a while to let Emiko process... everything, before getting together again. Emiko also starts secretly practicing her magic to let her access her hound form again for the sake of combat, while keeping control of her human thoughts, like a weird werewolf. There's also possibly a little sideplot about their main college lecturer getting suspicious of them & eventually finding out about the gang's superhero antics & then being like "ya'll good??? Do you need a break??? You guys are in your early 20s, you should be at the club."
Tyler & Zeke get trapped somewhere for a bit while they're trying to protect the Pearl Of Weather, eventually having an argument as Tyler finally snaps at Zeke for his past & present condescending behaviour; after which they eventually reconcile, working together to get out. Zeke starts identifying as non-binary some time after the argument with Tyler, symbolically "killing off" the person xe used to be & fully cutting ties with his past, finally making an effort to get over his guilt & start improving for xyr own sake, instead of others'. Xe doesn't really like being called by his full first name, "Ezekiel", anymore, as it's a tie to his past, being what Persophia & Adam have always called him. "Zeke" used to just be a nickname from xyr friends, but now it's what he prefers.
At some point near the end, Zeke sacrifices xyrself & gets captured on purpose so he can talk to Adam, which leads to a heated argument resulting in Zeke breaking the news to Adam about the QuantumWand & how Persophia's been using it to weaken Adam's powers, which then leads to Adam storming off & breaking it in his anger. Meanwhile, Zeke has a bit of a guilt relapse & has a nightmare about it in his sleep.
Anyway, back at home, EVERYONE else at Team Chaos is freaking out, because Zeke never once told them about xyr plan. At first, Ryan tries to hold everyone together because of his responsibility complex & tries to come up with a plan, but actually has no idea what the hell they're going to do & ends up finally having a breakdown about how he he's so sorry he's can't be perfect he can't be what everyone wants from him he's so sorry he can't even save his boyfriend he's a failure- before Emiko & Tyler get him to pull himself together & calm down, reassuring him that he doesn't have to be perfect, and doesn't have to do this alone, they're a team, then everyone collectively decides to come up with a plan together, then the three bust into where Zeke is being held, and Tyler fanboys over his amazing wolf-shapeshifter girlfriend.
Emiko eventually finds Adam sulking on a balcony & convinces him to join the good guys; which also wraps up Emiko's arc about getting over her trust issues, showing that she now trusts Zeke & his belief that there's still good in his brother, then extending her trust to Adam & being willing to reach out to him, despite having many valid reasons to want him dead.
After that, Adam separates from the group temporarily to steal all the Quantum Order's classified data, but Persophia, unaware of his betrayal, confronts him about his repeated failures to imprison Team Chaos; which becomes an argument when it's revealed he's switched sides, escalating to the point where she shows her true colours to him & directly attacks him. He's protected by Tyler's shield at the last moment. Mother & son part ways for the final time as she chases everyone out of the building.
Zeke. 21-22. Second year of college. Majoring in Biomedical Science.
Adam. 20-21. Dropped out of college to be privately taught, whoops.
Tyler. 22-23. Second year of college. Majoring in Archaeology.
Emiko. 21-22. Redoing her first year of college. Majoring in Early Childhood Education. Continuing her part-time job as a kindergarten teacher, but had to cut down her hours because of all the angst & trauma going on.
Ryan. 21-22. Second year of college. Majoring in Robotics.
Nova. 6-7. Kindergarten 2.
Dates: Year 2XX5 to 2XX6
SEASON 3: Adam's joined Team Chaos! Zeke gets called out by Ryan for not telling anyone about xyr plan, because while he's glad it all worked out for the better in the end, ayo making everybody worry & risk their lives like that was still pretty messed up; and instead of backing xyrself into a corner & spiralling into guilt like xe usually does... Zeke just kinda sucks it up & goes "yeah my bad" & takes the L. Xe sincerely apologises to everybody, and after a while, things are good again.
Meanwhile, Persophia's plan is now fully in action; the portal is on its way to becoming fully functional; & the gang has to find a way to destroy it, before it's too late. More focus on recovery, since at this point everyone's realised what their biggest personal problems are & are trying to support each other, but still need to figure out what they're gonna do in their regular normal mundane lives & exploring who they are beyond all the saving-the-world stuff & past trauma; which also means more domestic slice-of-life fluff moments between the gang!
Some self-reflective calm-before-the-storm vibes overarching the whole season, because they've just learned from the data Adam retrieved that Persophia wants to fully destroy the world instead of just conquering it. The world might literally end soon, so now everyone has to ask: what makes this world worth saving? What are they going to miss if they don't succeed? On the off-chance they don't succeed, how do they make the most of their last moments together? ...Anyway, after some meddling matchmaking shenanigans from Emiko & Ryan to get their respective partners together, the Emiko-Tyler-Zeke-Ryan polycule is up & running! Zeke, Tyler, and Ryan also get to graduate from college. :) Adam also figures out how to expand his magic skillset so that he can temporarily give others his telepathy; further facilitating communication and opening up between the team.
Anyway things happen & there's a huge ominous glowing green beam in the sky as the portal's slowly being opened & Persophia almost wins, as the whole city is overrun by Reaper Hounds & robots created by her flexing her abilities. Cracks in the Earth start to form, filled with acidic liquid, and the plants are starting to wilt. Persophia's strong enough to take over the city & spread her army to other neighbouring areas, but not strong enough to destroy the world just yet. Team Chaos gets the idea to get their old college teachers & juniors to help with an epic kaiju fight against Persophia, who's by now transformed into a horrifying giant Reaper-Hound-Human-Centaur monstrosity. Adam uses his magic to help connect all the minds in the city so they can send messages telling everyone either how to help or how to evacuate.
At the end, she's stopped by Team Chaos just... shoving her into the portal she created, as it's grown big enough to fit her giant form; this idea was suggested by Nova, who's by now learned enough about magic to theorise that the overload of magic could end up killing her, like an overcharged battery; which it does!
But it's not over yet; the portal's still open, and the gang realises they need to get to the actual machine & close it that way. Problem is; it's extremely volatile, and not exactly safe to touch, or even be in the near proximity of. As it continues fritzing out, Zeke has a realisation: Xe's the only one here with a gun.
So, charging forward, even amidst everyone's cries as they take shelter behind Tyler's shield, Zeke gets out his blaster & shoots the damn portal machine once and for all. Zeke survives, but xe definitely doesn't make it out unscathed; half xyr face was burnt in the resulting explosion, and he gets partial face paralysis to boot.
Afterwards, barring private & personal details, Ryan leaks basically everything they know about Persophia & The Quantum Order online under an anonymous account, Adam & Zeke disband the Quantum Order organisation altogether, Emiko starts a support group for everyone who was a victim of the Reaper Hound experiments or just experienced the general trauma of the failed apocalypse. None of them elaborate further to the public or are taking any more questions, instead redirecting everyone to the leak, because all of them are SO done with this & are going to take a nap & watch movies together.
Zeke. 22-23. Third year of college. Majoring in Biomedical Science. Graduates.
Adam. 21-22. Redoing his first year of college. Majoring in Marine Engineering, this time.
Tyler. 23-24. Third year of college. Majoring in Archaeology. Graduates.
Emiko. 22-23. Second year of college. Majoring in Early Childhood Education. Part-time job as a kindergarten teacher.
Ryan. 22-23. Third year of college. Majoring in Robotics. Graduates.
Nova. 7-8. Primary School Year 1.
Dates: Year 2XX6 to 2XX7
I know it's super cliche but basically the driving force/theme in CBA is the PoWeR oF LoVe; whether be it platonically, romantically, or familial.
Tyler wanting to save Emiko because she's his girlfriend & he loves her, Ryan wanting to find Nova because he loves his little sibling, Nova wanting to stay behind and try to free Emiko because that's epics favourite teacher & epic loves having her for class, Emiko being so protective & scared of losing the others because she loves them & can't lose them again. Zeke being horrified at what Adam & Persophia have done because?? That's his little brother & mother & he loved his family so much? And it hurts? Emiko reaching out to Adam in season 2, because she knows that Zeke still loves his brother deep down; the love that Tyler, Zeke, and Ryan have shown Emiko being what gets her to overcome her trust issues, and reach out to someone who needs the same amount of help as she once did.
Emiko, Tyler, Zeke, and Ryan ending up being a polycule at the end who all love each other, both romantically & platonically, and it's only when all of them + Adam as a team are working together, that they can save the world from impending doom; because they love each other & they love humanity & this cannot be the end.
It's about a bunch of mentally ill young adults thinking they're inherently unlovable & being scared of showing each other their vulnerabilities, only to be repeatedly proven wrong, time & time again, because everyone loves each other for exactly who they are, underneath all the walls & fears & pretending to be strong.
This story is intentionally a bit goofy & unrealistic because it was originally a (affectionate) parody of 2000s-2010s superhero cartoons (It's grown to be a bit more than that, but that's what I originally made the concept from) (Not to say my other stories aren't goofy & unrealistic, but this is especially moreso); so don't take this universe too seriously, I just wanted to make a dumb sci-fi/action/magic/adventure thing, haha. (I mean, there are more serious parts that I do try to handle respectfully, like the mental health bits, but for the most part this story is for the sillies.)
Might be in the same universe as Meteorite Road but I haven't decided yet.
