Chemo-Mechanics of Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing

One of the group’s main research tracks is the development of multiscale and multiphysics modeling strategies that explore the fundamentals of the chemo-mechanics of adhesion in cold spraying process. In this project, we collaborate with the Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Institute (AMMI) at Rowan University.

In this project we are specifically interested in (1) understanding the nature of bond formation between polymer particles impacting polymer substrate, and (2) Quantification and prediction of the critical velocity required for a successful adhesion between similar and dissimilar materials.

The graphic below shows the evolution of equivalent plastic strain developed at the interface of a single polymeric particle impacting a polymer substrate at a 500 m/s velocity.
