Leadership for Elementary YS

"The reality is students struggle not because of their race, language, or poverty. They struggle because they are not offered sufficient high-level learning experiences in the classroom to develop the cognitive skills and habits of mind that will prepare them for advanced coursework."

Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, Zaretta Hammond, 2015

This rubric breaks out each of the four parts of the YS model (committed professionals, find/identify, nurture/guide/support, and essential elements) to help schools identify their current stage of implementation and set goals for future actions.

The rubric is used with participants in the Young Scholars: A Model for Success Academy course. A project assignment in the course asks participants to reflect on the rubric and prioritize next steps to discuss with school-based administrators.

When developing School Improvement and Innovation Plans (SIIP) and considering ways to close the gap and ensure equity of access and opportunity, consider goals related to strengthening the Young Scholars model. For example, goals may include plans for implementing AAP curriculum, culturally responsive teaching practices, or a mentorship program.
