Encapsulation is an important communication skill as well as processing strategy for students as they synthesize content. It supports convergent thinking as students name and notice big ideas.
As you work towards encapsulating ideas, consider instructional approaches such as having students create an elevator speech, generate/sort/synthesize, or writing tweets or hashtags related to lessons in language arts.
• Use a non-content topic to introduce encapsulation, then use encapsulation for content
• List most important aspects and then look to combine/ organize/ prioritize/ synthesize
• Practice finding and sharing the important points in as few words as possible
• Overarching ideas or general ideas rather than specific details
• Connections that show synthesis of ideas
• What is the most essential thing to remember?
• What could be said about ______in 30 seconds or less?
• Explain the concept in ___ words or fewer.
• Create a visual representation of the idea.
