We use obstacle courses in our treatment all the time! It is a very fun way to practice multiple different skills with a child at once and removes all the boring repetition from doing one thing over and over again.
Each obstacle is a new challenge for the child to problem-solve. It also teaches children how to combine their skills together in a functional manner that they may not have as much practice doing when they focus on one skill at a time. It is one of the best ways to combine play with strengthening and skill training.
Participating in the obstacle course with the child is an incredible opportunity for connection and a chance to see first-hand the difficulties they may face with a skill from their perspective. It adds another layer to our empathy for the child. Plus, why should they have all the fun?
Use any of the items below in whatever combination you like, to set up an exciting obstacle course in your gym at school or at home! Be sure to choose items that will work on the skills your child is learning and ones that are a good balance of challenging but achievable.
