Module 5: Systemic Improvement Informs Leadership identified different types of data and how to look at a variety of ways data can be communicated to support goals. The content reviewed standards and frameworks for supporting student learning and the variety of tools to collect, manage, and facilitate improvement of instructional practices for teachers and learning outcomes for students. Through this module, one can gather a greater understanding of the importance of using data for assessing student learning, communicating success to stakeholders, and how collected data can strengthen academic programs and professional learning.

Throughout my tenure in my current position, my work has been focused on developing a robust infrastructure so that media-rich, technology-infused instruction can occur in all classrooms without interruption. In building such an infrastructure and as more services become digital, I’ve had to lean heavily on strategies to integrate systems so that they are automated in order to be most efficient in our work. At this point, my work on improving operational systems is one of my greatest strengths. I’ve fostered an environment that is focused on making the “back-end” work with the least amount of intrusion on teachers’ time.
An area that still needs work is a focus on using data to identify and solve issues. I do this, as does my department, however it is not an organizational norm to look at data to find out why things are not working as they should. My next steps are to work with my staff to help generate reports that indicate gaps in our student achievement and assessment data as well as demographic data with proposed solutions or next steps to close those gaps.
