Families play a vital role in every student's education. Families can reach me quickly through the Remind App, which I have used for years. Additionally, I send home monthly calendars with a homework menu as well as a weekly update on key skills. Traditional emails and phone calls work as well!
I cherish each student and work with them to help them understand where their behaviors may be coming from as well as the consequences that come with the choices they make. I focus heavily on the students' positive choices and the positive consequences that come with those.
Incorporating social emotional learning (SEL) I have also developed extensive lessons on the 'learned emotions' such as compassion, empathy, and patience. These lessons help students gain a more complete understanding of themselves and how they react to the world around us.
For those students who struggle significantly, I have developed many individualized behavior systems. Often times these systems are self-contained within the classroom, but I am always open and eager to work with my behavior team to support these students.
Students are so much more than a number, but the numbers certainly tell a great story, too! Avenues like RTII, PLC goals, and PBIS help us to address all tiers and support students where they are at. My goal for both academics and behavior is to grow the green! How can I address student needs in the red and yellow tiers and move them into the green? Looking at individual's data as well as group data allows us as educators to better understand how to educate students in effective and meaningful ways.
Providing students with the opportunity to be autonomous when it comes to their seating choice leads to problem solving skills, conflict resolution strategies, and more focused workers. I have used flexible seating in my classroom for the last few years and I am always amazed how even young students rise to the occasion and learn to choose what is best for their body.
Building my teaching career in a Title I school has given me a unique perspective on the power of targeted interventions and the ability they have to 'grow the green'! I have worked with outstanding Title teams to develop and run fluid intervention groups specific to student needs.
I've worked closely with my teams over the last seven years fine tuning our PLC teams. By making SMART goals, carefully tracking student progress and mindfully teaching fundamental skills, we have seen wonderful results and become aware of significant skill deficits that need to be addressed.
